Xenon headlight bulb replacement

Featured Replies

Morning all, the OS headlight bulb flickered a bit yesterday and then expired last night. It is a Mk 2 2014 Elegance estate with xenon headlights, I believe that replacement bulbs are quite expensive and not a DIY change, anyone have any pointers on what to do. I am considering Halfords but don't know if they will do the swap and not sure if I would trust them anyway. Would like to get it sorted asap as I do quite a lot of driving in the dark ( not that there's that much daylight at the moment). There is a VAG independent near where I work but they aren't open until Monday. Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks in advance, Chris

For the replacement procedure, have a look at this thread and infoschumi's 2nd post: Xenon headlight replacement

The H1S bulbs needed aren't cheap so shop around. The Skoda OEM ones (Phillips or Osram supply them) can be bought for €50 to €60 here in Ireland (can be €30 to €40 more if you got to the wrong places).

I thought the Superb used D1S xenon bulbs?

CORRECT!

Apologies - I typed the wrong type. D1S is correct.  Must have HID on the brain when I was typing.

Well, the bulb is replaced, had it done by the local indy, they said it was a pig of a job so glad I didn't attempt it myself.

One of my staff did it themselves. I asked them how tricky it was.

I'm his boss and he is usually extremely polite and helpful. He looked across at my Superb and told me if I ever wanted help to change mine, I could go and make violent love to my own nether regions.

It was very easy to change d1s hid, I have changed myself.

It takes me less time to replace the xenon bulbs in my superbs than the halogen h7 in our fabia!

Turn off the car, take off rubber boot, remove lower cable from the xenon bulb, rotate to release, remove plastic retainer and move to new bulb. Reverse the above and you're good to go.

Don't go above 4500k colour temperature as the brightness drops off above this.

I love the Osram Xenarc Nightbreaker Unlimited https://www.hids4u.co.uk/D1S-OSRAM-Night-Breaker-Unlimited-Xenarc-35W-4300K-Xenon-HID-Bulb.html

Make sure you replace in pairs.

Hi there, it appears that on this forum, instructions around how to replace bi-xenon headlight bulbs range from a simple DIY to needing a garage. Much of what I have read refers to a round rubber cap that needs removing to access the bulb compartment. What if there are no visible round rubber caps and instead you see a metal plate lining at the back of the lamps (which appear to be ballasts - I understand that these bi-xenon bulbs need to have). How would you go about replacing the xenon bulb and is that an easy DIY job that can be done just by lifting the hood and working on the lamp unit or is there more to this (e.g. needing to remove the front bumper to remove the whole lamp unit or as I have also seen in some cases, removing the front wheels and the fender to access the lamp unit from underneath the wheel). I attach a picture of what my headlight back unit under the hood looks like - scratching my head to understand how to open it to access the bulb unit.

Any advice with this much appreciated.

Thank you.

If yours is a 2015 car, that makes it a facelift model. As I understand, replacing xenon bulbs on the mk2 facelift does involve bumper removal, and you need a D3S bulb instead of D1S.

I’m about to have a go replacing mine, but this is on a 2012 pre-facelift so should be easy.

@Dr_Mike_Oxgreen thank you for confirming this. The dealer has also confirmed my vehicle needs D3S bulbs. I am still pondering a DIY job on this if the bumper removal process is straightforward. I have a lot of tools so want to put them to good use. I am considering buying a workshop manual for this and other basic low risk DIY things I want to perform myself (all other bulb changes, air filter changes, cabin air filter changes, etc). I have been quoted £50 for such a manual (pdf form). Will probably give that a go.
