Change tyre profile on same rims

Featured Replies

I had a Yeti S TDI from 2010-Jan 2019 on 16" rims. I ran Yokohama Geolandar AT tyres on it and they were pretty good - fairly quiet, good mileage, bags of grip.

I've now got a 2015 Yeti 4x4 but it has 17" wheels which appear to have far fewer AT tyres available for them - they are 225/50R17. I tow a caravan and need to be able reliably to haul the 'van off a wet or muddy field, maybe up a slope, and odd track etc. Nothing extreme.

Some questions:

  1. Can you fit tyres of slightly different dimensions to the same wheels, especially a deeper sidewall, and how much different can they be?
  2. does anyone have any recommedations to replace what seem to be Michelin Green X which are there on now
  3. could I put 16" wheels on the new Yeti with a better selection of tyres?
  4. any other suggestions.

Thanks guys.

There are various authorised (homologated) sizes, can be found on this link, the 16 inch is only for the 2wd facelifted Yeti.  Your 17s with 55 are deepest, the alternatives are even lower profile.

You may be better with M+S rated all season or winter tyres.

Pick ones with good reviews, you want the best rated tyres, at sensible price, not ones that are medium (or poor) rated, however cheap they are.
