New MK1 VRS owner - Interior Noise

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I picked up a MK1 VRS combi last night. I will start a separate thread to introduce myself and the car once I've taken some photos :)

This morning, I noticed a noise in the interior of the car coming from the glove box area. It kind of sounded like the climate control constantly adjusting it's diverters & doesn't stop even with the climate control switched off.

I'm hoping this is common and someone on here will have experienced this before :)

Thanks!

Can you describe the sound, or perhaps emulate it in text form?

Is it a click click, a whoo-whoo, a brrrrvvvvv, a schnargle-fargle, a bzzzzzzzzzt, or something else?

You know when you change the direction buttons on your climate control panel and you hear the mechanical movement of the diverters and sometimes some clicking? Well it's exactly like that but constant. It wouldn't be a million miles apart from the sound a CD changer makes if struggling to read a disc. I feel I'm not doing a great job at describing it :)

So if you turn just the ignition on, go through the system POST, hear the headlights auto-adjust and all the test lights on the dash go out... after that, everything is all quiet, but you get a little 'tik... tik... tik...' from somewhere behind the centre console, or maybe the glove box?

Is that right?

If so, I have no idea... but mine sometimes does it too!

Doesn't seem to be any harm. Might be something like the aircon compressor priming. I think I asked about it here once, but didn't get a response.

I am not sure about that, but if the "tik-tik" resembles something like hitting you fingernail on plastic then it most likely would be like a plastic "arm" that guides the flaps of the AC behind the dashboard. Didn't hear that in a Skoda but in a C class Benz because those arm things are made of plastic and don't age well, 10-15 years and they crack and make that "tik" noise when you switch on ignition for like half minute. Not sure if it's applicable to the Skoda, but if this is the issue then it's not really harmful, but when you want to change those, make sure you change all of them because of the fuss of taking apart the dash, and the fact that the others will go pretty soon.

Mine has been doing this since I bought the car. I believe that it is a common fault associated with the vent flaps or the motor or the linkage between the motor and the flap.

I pulled out my glove box and half the blower motor gubbins  to try and get a look.  The part was quite a guddle to reach so I decided that trying to change it would cost me lot of knuckle skin so I gave up.

Mine still clicks away or sometimes it grunts like there is a micro pig in the glove box. ... I just turn the radio up now.

It sounds like your recirc flap motor is continuously trying to complete its task in a direction but is being prevented from doing so for some reason.

Things to check first would be -

1:  That you have not got leaves or something in the heater intake opening - unlikely if the pollen filter has been changed recently, but the chances increase the longer the filter has been left unchanged - especially if you park under trees.

2:  The motors have become unsynced - this can be reset in about 5 minutes with VCDS

3:  The motor gear has worn and needs replacement - this usually throws a code which can be detected in VCDS, but to be really honest is not a nice job to do as it involves a fair amount of interior to be removed to gain access.

Hopefully your cute is a simple one,

Hope it helps.
