All vehicles are subject to vehicle excise duty based on the fuel type of the vehicle and its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions level, measured in grams per kilometre (g/km). The weight of a vehicle will influence the level of CO2 emitted.

As a result, vehicles with higher levels of specification may emit higher levels of CO2. Once a car has been built it will be given its own specific CO2 emission on which the Vehicle Excise Duty will be charged. The VED bands are shown here.
