High idle and smoking

Featured Replies

Hi allnew to the forum. I have 61 vrs. I have an issue which i cant get to the bottom off. Bacisally sometime my vrs starts to idle high and stays on 10 and when it does the car smokes alot. It onlu starts to smoke when it goes on high idle. Now this happens now and then somwtimes for a whole day sometimes for a few hoirs and then dosnt for a few days. Ive changed the throttle body new glow plugs serviced regularly. Can anyone help with this if they can.

Sounds like it's trying to Regen the DPF

Ive had the dpf cleaned forced reg.also i have no warni g livhts and no fault codes on diagnostics

As Anddenton says, just sounds like it's trying to do a regen of the DPF.

I'm guessing you do a lot of short town trips, if so, it will regen every couple of hundred miles.

Both mine & my wifes 2l Passat do this around town.

During faster driving or on the motorway you wouldn't know it was regenning.

Yes i do lots of shirt trips as im a taxi driver. So how do i go bout sorting this. Like today it started from 7 and just stoped now at 11 lol.

White smoke on regen is normal if you have had the emissions "fix"

My smoke is more blue than white and smell alot. 1 mechanice said its my injector seals. But i told him the high idle and smoking is not constant and rhe smoke haooens only when it starts to idke high.

what's the mileage? Is the engine getting up to temperature?

You just need a journey as un-interupted as possible, above 40MPH & revs above 1800.

It should only take around 15 minutes to complete.

If it takes any longer than 30 mins you may have a sensor problem that is still within expected ECU parameters, so not illuminating the EML but influencing the regan process.

The milage is 150k and the temp goes up fine. Also ive done the drive up and down local parkway for 30 mins and hasnt stopoed the problem

I would suggest as I said above,  you may have a sensor problem that is still within expected ECU parameters, so not illuminating the EML but influencing the regen process.

Find someone with VCDS who can look at live data.

They can check if the data being sent from sensors that influence the regen process are sending correct data as far as would be expected.

Have a look at the map below & see if there is anyone local to you then PM them a message.

Ok thanks il have a look and see if can get to bottom off it. Thanks all

At 150k miles and a taxi, I wouldn't be surprised if the DPF isn't getting towards the end of its life.

Ive had it cleaned aswell

So guys i plugd it in and basicaly the cars not gettig any reading at all on some points around the dpf. The following is a pic i took of the ones that arnt getti g a reading at all. Just 2 dots. Mechanic said need an auto eleccy to have a look at ecu and fi d out why there is no reading coming at all even tho all sensors are plugged in.

I'd be tempted to say that whoever has cleaned your DPF hasn't reset everything accordingly so the ECU doesn't know what is going on.

So do we need to go inside the ecu and reset everything? Or will the auto mec know this when he pkugs it in

Blue smoke is unburnt engine oil.

If it is only being omitted when the DPF is regenerating (high RPM), then you have unburnt engine oil in your DPF, most likely from a leaking turbo seal.

The unburnt engine oil is increasing the pressure in the DPF which the sensors think is soot, hence the initiation of the regeneration. As the DPF heats up the excess oil is being burnt off and is exiting via the exhaust.

If the DPF has been cleaned then it's life has been severely restricted. Cleaning the DPF (despite what the companies that do it say) is a relatively short term fix. How was the DPF cleaned? Was it removed and cooked in an oven (the best way) or simply washed out with a jet wash?

8 years use, high mileage, a jet wash and oil contamination mean your DPF is very nearly dead I'm afraid. It's now only a matter of time before you see the DPF warning light, EML and / or limp-home mode.

Find the source of the oil leak ASAP.

Ive had a new engine and new turbo also new throttle body. Wgr coolent sensor. Going to see what the auto man says and see if he can find the fault jn why the sensors arnt giving a reading

Hi guys back again. So had the auto man check car and he said its my egr valve the bit that is on top of the throttle body. So changed that and still getting the high revs and blue smoke. There was a wire that was broken aswell but changing that hasnt solved it. Someone told me it could be the pcv valve thst sits on top of the engine. Any ideas would be helpfull

You need to find a new "auto man".

You've already identified the issue, the DPF sensors aren't reading or reporting any values. The likely affect of this is that the DPF isn't operating correctly.

Your high RPM at idle and smoke out of the exhaust are all pointing to the DPF.

Thank you il liok for a new auto man and find which sensors are not giving a reading
