Engine light keeps coming on...beginning of the end?

Featured Replies

I've had my car for ~9 years now and it's been very reliable with no major issues. In the last couple of months, though, I've started to have problems

Firstly, I was driving along a motorway and noticed the power was dipping from time to time. Looked at the dash and lo and behold, the engine light was on. Eased off the throttle to try and get to the exit but then started to completely lose power - speed was dropping quickly so had to pull into the hard shoulder to avoid grinding to a halt on the motorway. Got the AA out and a scan revealed a fault with the fuel valve. The long and short of it is that I had to get the fuel value replaced - not disastrous but not cheap either (£125).

Then a couple of weeks back the engine light came on again, though there were no obvious issues driving it this time and no loss of power like previously. Took it into the garage and the fault code was showing an issue with the breather valve, which was apparently leaking. So had to get that fixed (valve, gasket, hose, etc) which knocked me back another £190.

Cut to yesterday, driving back from Leeds to Manchester and what happens? Engine light is back on again! :worried:

So I'm just at that point of wondering whether it's going to end up costing more to keep replacing bits than it would to just change the car. I don't want to have keep forking out to fix things on a car that's 12 years old and probably not worth a fat lot. But on the other hand, aside from the issues recently experienced, it's actually been driving pretty well.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a "tipping point" where things have started to go wrong more frequently and maintenance costs have started adding up? Is it worth ploughing more money into it? I know it's my choice at the end of the day...I'm just interested to hear if anyone else has gone through something similar.

You own a 2007 TFSI and its not blown up and you haven't mentioned it burning oil so I would say your in great shape

The way I work it out is I keep a record of all money spent over the year including mot and repairs then divide by twelve and you get your monthly figure which usually works out a not a very lot.

Its a twelve year old car you need to expect to having running repairs.
What was you last years running costs or your last big bill?

Did you get the fault codes from the first two EML appearances?
