GRP is a nighmare!

Featured Replies

I decided I wanted to make my Furby a little more stand out. I see that a few people have MSD style sports grills and I really liked the look of them. They are made out of ABS and now I know why.

I bought a cheaper one from ebay which is made in GRP (Glass reenforced plastic) thinking that it wouls just be a two hour job prep and spray...

I forgot that with GRP you have a less than pefect finish out of the mould and some areas need to be flattened and filled. I also forgot that several coats of hibuild primer are needed to seal and smooth the surface (About 3-4 hrs work not including drying time)

You also need to remember that Black Magic is a mix only paint and you need to go to specialist who will mix you up a can if you don't have access to spray kit (or can't be arsed mixing 2k) (About £20 for colour and a good laquer and you MUST have a good laquer - U-Pol is the dogs)

Here is the result (Crap photo but....) with which I am quited please I am hoping the grill will be ok to fit tonight for tomorrows meet!

GRP and FRP both need a lot of finishing work after theyve been cast as youve experienced. And yes looking from the pic of it you did get a decent job done there! Did the mesh come along with the grill or are you putting in something yourself? Do post a final pic on the car.
