Does anyone here have the auto light assist option in combination with their full LED headlights?

 

The image on the Skoda configurator gives the impression that auto light assist enables beam shaping (see attached image). Note in the picture the car is a Karoq and the beam is being shaped to avoid dazzling the oncoming vehicle while maintaining the light throw directly ahead of the vehicle. This type of light shaping is available on high end vehicles utilising a matrix or active LED system. To my knowledge, the Karoq LED headlamp unit is not this type and instead the only active element is a movement to raise the level of the lights.

 

What I think confuses this is that the LED headlights are referred to by default as an adaptive front lighting system (without the auto light assist). This terminology is ambiguous and, in my opinion, hyperbolic because it doesn’t make it clear anywhere what is meant specifically by the term “adaptive”. 

 

My current car is a Seat Leon with LED headlights and the auto high beam assist. It works, but the headlights on main beam are essentially the same headlights with the beam angle raised so that the light throws further. It would be a bit disappointing to learn that the system is the same in the Karoq and I would argue that the image is misleading as well if indeed that is the limit of the system functionality.

The Karoq's headlights in their design and operation are very similar to that of the Kodiaq's, which has been discussed at great length (see linked post below).

 

Skoda UK are good at one thing, causing confusion!

 

Essentially the headlights move up and down (self leveling) and move the lens back and forth (for the different beam patterns depending on the driving conditions etc.), but do not swivel left or right.

 

The additional lighting for cornering is via a seperate pair of LED's inside the headlight, and also the cornering front fog light feature...

Are the lights similar to the Superb ones where certain parts of the light turn off to stop blinding oncoming vehicles?

Silver1011 - thanks for that, it’s very informative. I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that I bothered to spec this given that it’s essentially auto high beam. The available literature is quite misleading I think.

I haven't found matrix LEDs (the ones where parts of the light are shut off) as an option on the Karoq. 

 

High beam assist activates high beam under the right conditions, then knocks back to dipped beam if a car is approaching/being followed or you enter an illuminated area.

I do think the image I posted is misleading on Skoda's part. It clearly suggests shaping of a light throw cone. That isn't possible with the Karoq headlight unit technology so I don't understand why they had a designer or artist or whatever create an image that illustrates something that doesn't exist.

Are you sure?

 

The lens won't move left and right, but will move back and forth.

 

It is this back and forth movement that alters the beam pattern to adjust for use in rain and at varying speeds etc.

The beam changes according to speed, with a wider beam when travelling slowly (to illuminate footpaths, for example) and a narrower, longer beam when travelling at speed.

I get that. But I also have that already in a Seat Leon with LED headlights, where the beam angle adjusts automatically over 40mph I think and uses the camera to dip and raise the reflectors to throw the beam further.

 

My issue is with the image I posted which is from Skoda's configurator page because it is the image used for the auto light assist optional extra. It is not showing the features you describe, it is clearly showing an adaptive system that is keeping full beam on while shaping the light beam so that it doesn't dazzle the oncoming driver. Which, it has been established, is not something the auto light assist does. 

 

The features you describe are the adaptive front light system, which is standard with the LED headlights. Auto light assist is an optional extra. Which it seems only to turn on and off the main beam by altering the levelling of the reflectors in a binary fashion rather than keeping the main beam on and shaping the light like a more advanced matrix LED system does.

It does seem like a poor choice of illustration.

 

The option on the Kodiaq configurator is clearer...

... but that's probably because the auto-dimming rear view mirror and the light and rain sensors that form part of the package on the Karoq are all already standard.
