This Has The Mechanics Flummoxed

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a Skoda, and I have a problem. Sadly my first post on this forum is a request for help. Please note that while I understand how an engine works in theory, I have next to no practical knowledge! I have a 2015 Mk 3 Skoda Fabia SE Estate. (1.4 TDI Manual). Every so often, currently around once a week, it will fail to start. Everything seems fine, the engine just starts to rev up according to the rev counter but then it cuts out after a second or two. There are no faults shown when the AA have come out with their diagnostic tool (twice) or when the garage have looked for errors. Sometimes after multiple attempts it will suddenly start normally. The only thing I can think of that each of the incidents have had in common, is that the engine has not been off for very long so may still be warm. I've looked at videos and forums of what I thought would be similar issues but none of them seemed to be the same. Here is a video of my car failing in action: https://youtu.be/9EyCnQccnXY

So far the mechanics at the garage have changed the fuel filter and a fuse (not sure which one) and they also mentioned something about a starter relay but I don't think they did anything with it. Over to you ladies and gents! Thanks in advance.

Get your keys reprogramed... They are triggering the anti theft system.

My original key was working while my backup key had similar results as your video.

Just the dsg variant of fabia also gives you a gearbox error with shutdown.

Then yet... See attached picture. The MFD points you to user manual... Try to read it and disable SafeLock if you can to see if problem persists.

Hmm, that's an odd one. Could I test this by using a spare key or would it affect both keys? In any case I'll look into it, thanks.

Any other suggestions appreciated as well!

Try using the spare key, why not.

The key suggestion is probably a good starting point, maybe one key has a weak battery so look to get battery changed (Timpsons in big supermarkets are good), take both keys when you go.  I think battery has to be changed quickly otherwise key looses program.

What might have happened is that key got squashed at some time, and pressed down a button for long while.

Thanks chaps, I'll be testing out the key theory during this week. Fingers crossed.
