TSI 1.8 compensation

Featured Replies

I brought a 2011 superb eleglance estate 1.8 tsi from a customer. I paid a £1000 for due to bad oil consumption and problem chain tensioner. I had had the piston rings upgraded and heads and boars smoothed and a new timing chain set. My local garage did the work and a good job too, problem fixed. 1800 miles later, I'm hearing a strange noise while pulling in to get fuel. That evening my car was put in a recovery lorry and driven back home. On further inspection I am told the bridge bearing is faulty which is why the chain tensioner was loose. Great a reconditioned engine £1500 and my latest bill of £1680 to fix this factory fitted faulty part. My ? Is this. As the car is a 2011 model, can I claim for compensation from either Skoda or VW??

Many thanx

Will

8 years old? Engine rebuilt by local independent? Extremely unlikely, in fact I would say nigh on impossible after 6 years, no full Skoda history and other garages involvement.

The bridge bearing could/should have been checked/changed during the rebuild while it was stripped down.

What is a bridge bearing? Google only gives me pictures of bearings below bridges, but that is obviously not meant in this topic.

I think it is a short way of referring to the "Camshaft Bearing Mount Bridge Bracket".  Pop that phrase into Google and you'll get a number of hits on the VAG TSi 1.8 and 2.0 engines.

It would be the silver part in the centre of the pic below - more information at this link  (its for the Audi/VAG 2.0 Tsi but the same issue is on the VAG 1.8 Tsi as well).

In summary, it is responsible for getting oil to the camshafts and their bearings. There is a little screen inside them that can dislodge. If that happens, it starves the camshaft of oil and can lead to a wrecked engine.
