Timing Belt or Chain....

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a 2015 Skoda Yeti with a 1.2 tsi engine, engine code is (J623-CBZB)

Does this engine have a timing belt or chain?

Many Thanks.

Can you see the oil filter on the left front of the engine, near the top? If so it has a chain.

Yes, thats exactly where it is... Thanks for your reply.

I was told from mechanic it doesn't have a timing belt so I'm happy about that

That suggests your mechanic doesn't know a lot about VAG's.
There has been a problem with the chain driven 1.2 engine which has resulted in a recall to fit a different chain and tensioner.
Modern cam belts are very different to the old ones and are much less of a problem.

Saying that at 2015 this will be the latest possible version of the  CBZB EA111 1.2 tsi so should have up to date tensioner, sprokets and chain fitted and should be reliable. However cam chain / tsi engines do not like long life service intervals. If it has this change to fixed 10k mile/ annual servicing. If last oil change already beyond 10k - get it done now. Also make sure an original oil filter is fitted and ensure old rubber seal has been removed and the filter is not overtightened!

He did say they are about the same he said about 40000 the chain guide needs to be changed he said if the engine sounds like the tappets are making a noise it will be the chain guide I did check if there was a recall on my car and it said know recall

There were no 'Recalls' not even a Service Campaign / Recall Action pre 2012.   There was a TPI.  Technical Product Information.

Nothing about 40,000 miles for Chain Guides.
