Octavia overheating, how to determine water pump fault?

Hi Guys, 

 

Have had my 2013 Octavia Diesel VRS now for around 16 months and it has been running sweet until this week when it developed an overheating issue. I have been reading all the posts on here about the water pump being an issue. However how do you actually determine if it is the water pump that is the issue? Problem I have is it now appears fine and I cant get it to recreate the problem.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is likely your answer. When mine went it would over heat randomly and then be fine for a few days. Was definitely the water pump sleeve.

Thanks for the reply. I suspect it is but can not prove it. Just asked the same question to my Skoda dealer who want £102 for diagnosis. Even they cant tell me how but want £102 for the privilege of an "educated guess"

How about a local vag specialist who can diagnose it without spending a too much?

Its fairly common on the earlier ones, mine had same issue 18 months ago.

 

Got a 'goodwill' reduction on the bill from my local dealer, got them to change the cambelt while they were in there.

I suppose you will have to wait until the fault is there permanently?

 

Sorry for going off topic slightly is there a cut off date for when this pump fault was fixed with a modification from Skoda?

My dealer suggested sometime in 2016 as it took a few years and a few miles for the problem to appear.

Two weeks ago our local Skoda specialist had one of our elderly Fabias for three days chasing a mystery fault. They are ex main dealers. The fault remained elusive and they did not charge us anything. If your garage are going to charge £102 for the easiest diagnosis in the world then go elsewhere as they are stitching you up. Boiler fault diagnosis is my daily bread and butter, and unless it is something very involved I don't insult my customers for having a broken boiler by charging them to tell them what they already know. I charge them for repairing it.

@Turbo-Tone how many miles has the car done? Assuming out of warranty and cam belt due soon why not just get the belt and pump done? At least you are eliminating the most likely cause of the symptoms you described while getting some much needed maintenance done a the same time.

Car has only done 35000. Ended up going to another main dealer more local than the one I purchased it from. Wouldn't charge me for a diagnostic as they said they were fairly certain what the fault was. Can't blame them for being honest but they also said very little if no chance of a good will gesture towards the £495 they wanted to charge for repair. Ended up paying my normal garage £420 all in which included genuine parts. No signs of the problem since so fingers crossed it's all sorted

Bit of an guess it could be the thermostat that's sticking??
