1.4 petrol milage

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm looking at a 1.4 petrol 4x4 Yeti but I tend to do lot of miles. I was just wondering how high a mileage have people got before any troubles set in. And yes I do want petrol not diesel. Thanks.

Cars have a ‘design life’ of 10 years .

Has there been a petrol 4x4 version then? I thought, apparently mistakenly, that the only 4x4 Yetis were diesel.

Yes, there was a 1.8 petrol 4x4 previously.

Well slap my thighs, that's the second time I've been wrong this century

The latter 1.4 TSI L&K was also 4WD.

The PCP is up on my 1.4 TSI L&K next month and I have decided to keep it. It is cracking car and the engine is surprisingly good. Seat colour doesn't bother me.

Couldn't risk the 1.5 and the Karoq somehow didn't grab my interest like the Yeti, so keeping it long term or until something worth changing for turns up.

Could I ask what mileage you've done please?

Thanks

The 2015-2017 Yeti 1.4 Tsi  is the EA211 engine, seemingly (from the net) built by Skoda for use by everyone else in the VAG group, so your A3's, Golfs (since 2005) SEAT Ibiza Cupra, Polo GTI all use it  (in various forms of tune from 122-180bhp). I looked for reports of issues when I bought mine last year, and can't locate anything suggesting it's unreliable if cared for, and this says a lot for a engine used so widely. That said, the early(?) 1.8 petrol is not turning out to be the most reliable unit at high mileage and it's praises were sung for a long time. What I would say is, don't expect any sort of  the 'modern' decent mpg people rave about, the yeti's a lump in shape and weight, I have never seen anything above 35mpg (tracking mileage/petrol use, not listening to the computer) & usually around the 30 mark, but I also don't try driving economically (eg: 60mph on the motorway, is not something I could stomach). I bought mine as I've done 10K in the last year with it, and my last diesel (2009 VW Tdi) was far from reliable, so can't help on your high mileage feedback

PS: If I was doing higher mileage I would have bought a diesel..

I'm sorry julzgeraghty, I can't help you with mileage. I traded in a diesel 170 Yeti because my mileage dropped.  I just thought if you wanted a petrol Yeti the 1.4 would be OK.

I got a 1.4 last year (4*4 LK....only spec they do if you want a recent 1.4 Petrol). I had a 1.4 tsi Octavia for 3 years prior to that and it was a cracking engine, (123 hp I think). It drove as well as my previous 2.0 litre diesel Octavia and returned a similar mpg (45 actual). It had done about 60k miles and never missed a beat.

I got the Yeti as a “compromise”, (petrol engine, reasonable power for towing and reasonable economy when not....). I planned to tow a slightly larger caravan and I did not want another diesel due to low annual miles. I love the 1.4 Yeti, but will probably getting ride shortly as we decided not to get another caravan and I don’t really need a 4 wheel drive car. I have averaged 44 mpg (actual), but nearly all rural driving. I can’t make my mind up what to get next as the Yeti is a tough act to follow, I am considering either a 1.0 tsi A3 or a Golf...decisions decisions. ( Its a shame as the Yeti has only just passed 15k miles...).

Unfortunately the 1.4 ended up being just over budget but I've ended up with a diesel L&K, slightly higher milage but much more affordable. Thanks

for all your answers.

I think you made the best choice! The 1.4 petrol isn't very fuel efficient in day to day usage unless you are able to cut out town and high speed driving. My 1.4 L & K never got much better than low 30's mpg in daily usage, on a longer drive at slowish speeds 40 mpg was possible driven carefully. Enjoy your new car!

Is that because of the shape or the DSG box? I'm getting mid 40's mpg out of my manual 1.4tsi barge (aka Superb). This can drop just under 40 around town but about 50 on a run .

Combination of poor aerodynamics coupled with four wheel drive results in very poor fuel economy, not sure if this is exactly the same engine that you have in your car either. I'm finding the 1.5 petrol engine in the Octavia a lot more fuel efficient than the Yeti ever was with the engine being able to shut down two cylinders every so often to save fuel, the Yeti engine couldn't do that. PS No DSG box was ever available with the Yeti 1.4, manual gearbox all the way!

I had somewhat the same idea until recently . Try a search for " 1.4 TSI 150PS 4X4 Laurin & Klement Outdoor".

@longedge  When you got all the various sites and cars did you actually then find a 1.4tsi 150ps DSG 4x4 Laurin & Klement Outdoor for sale?

Ahhhh... errr.... umm...

Yes i saw you did not have DSG in your post, but i failed to see what you were saying, was it that there were 1.4TSI 4x4 with DSG, or just that manuals were the way to go?

There's a YT video of a test in a  1.4 TSI DSG Monte Carlo albeit in Germany -

I had the mistaken belief for a long time that 4x4 Yetis had only ever been produced as diesel variants and that was what I was alluding to :) .

The main reason will be the drag caused by the 4 wheel drive system, I assume the Superb is 2 wheel drive. I am actually getting similar mpg (44mpg) out of my 1.4 Yeti that I got from my previous 1.4 Octavia, but I do drive the Yeti a bit slower...

Hmm.. I had thought that it was the other way round, obviously not!  At the end of the Yeti production I thought I had seen 1.4 DSG L&K & 1.2 manuals petrols around. I seem to remeber that there were loads of good PCH deals going on the 1.4(EA211 engine) L&K at the time. The earlier Yeti 1.4(EA111 engine) were manuals though this was eventually discontinued.

Might look out for a later manual 1.4 L&K then!

You should have plenty of choice if you go to the dealers over the next month or so as there must have been a lot of ex PCH cars hitting the auctions in March, including my "old" Yeti L & K too! The 1.4 engine is quiet, reasonably powerful but nothing like the torque of a diesel engine, main issue you'll face is poor fuel consumption.

Mine is a 1.4TSi L&K 4x4, mpg is around 32-34 but thats mostly town driving.

PCP is up in about 3 months so starting to think my options, I fancy a 2WD petrol with DSG but there doesnt seem to be any exciting deals around at the moment.

That's pretty much what I get from my 1.2TSI DSG - Average over the 2 years since I got it (new) is 34.50 mpg with a high of 38.95 mpg although it's hardly 'run in' yet at 6,300 miles :) .
