When was vrs petrol engine changed to EA888?

Featured Replies

My son is looking for a vrs petrol Octavia.

He is looking at models around 2010.

I am right in assuming this is the EA888 engine with a timing chain.

When was the EA113 superceded?

Thanks in advance and nice to be back.

The engine changed with the facelift release.  2009 I believe.

The ea113 was not without issue either. And vehicles will be older.

Yeah that's the thing people always seem to miss - the EA113 wasn't perfect! All the focus is on the timing chain issues, where the EA113 has cam chain issues itself. To get the EA888 chain tensioner changed costs about the same as getting the EA113 cambelt done.

I thought the EA113 didn't have a cam chain!

It has both.

EA888 has a full chain, around crank and around both cam shafts.

EA113 has a belt around crank and one cam, then a chain from one cam to the other.

Factor in about £800 for changinging the chain kit on E888 engines or live in fear of a broken engine.  Of course this may have been done by a previous owner so check for an invoice. They can go with as little as 20000miles.

In other respects theE888 engine is fare more refined than earlier TSI versions.
