Fuel

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I have a skoda Octavia vrs 2.0 tfsi. I know 95 and above is recommended for fuel and I've heard never to use supermarket fuels. But what's the opinions on Tesco momentum 99 octane please

Many thanks

I wonder where people that say never use supermarket fuel think it comes from.

Do they think the tankers get the fuel from backstreet bootleggers, and is it below the standard required, less octane/ energy?

95 ron is not the recommended fuel, it is the Minimum Octane you should use. (in  other world regions it can be less, and they have lower octanes.)

All EU Type Approved petrols need to be able to run 95 ron.

Tesco Momentum 99 (99 octane min) or Sansbury's Super Unleaded 97 ron min will cost the same as 95 ron from Shell , BP, ESSO. etc.

Do no harm and might do good, have the car run more efficiently, and will you pay no more to try out a few tanks. Unless you did buy Supermarket 95 ron.

Supermarket Super Unleaded come from Fuel Suppliers / Greenergy that supplies ESSO and others.

Greenergy and Royal Dutch Shell import fuel as partners.

*You have to decide if the additive package of ethanol & detergents are any different.*

I use Tesco Momentum 99 rather than Shell V-Power Nitro +, and not because it is cheaper.  I like how i can trust Tesco / Greenergy, and not Shell stations or Royal Dutch Shell.

loads of Super Unleaded threads in the various Briskoda sections.

Thank you for your reply. I used to work for sainsburys and apparently they get their fuel from BP. I'll go back to using Tesco momentum then as it seems to me ok with you guys

Apparently.

Who's tankers delivered it, and did you ask a driver where they collected the fuel?

I think that Sainsbury do not get their filling station fuel from BP unless they were best priced at that time, but they get from a depot, and sourced at the best available prices, and then the Additive Package added for the Super Unleaded.

Yes apparently

Was a store manager. But I agree with you. Surely if a fuel would damage an engine it wouldn't be allowed.

So 99 momentum will be my choice from now on

Thanks for your help Skoffski

So basically all fuels are perfectly fine. Just some offer alittle more power delivery for a price ?

Yup!*

I use either ASDA or Sainsbury. The local Shell is closer, but it is normally 8 - 10ppl more expensive. Why?!

When I have used a big branded fuel I honestly could not say if I could tell the difference between it and  the supermarket variety.

My credit card could.

*I would check your handbook, I'm aware that some engines do require the higher octane due to the way they have been set up by the manufacturer.

I'm going to go for the fancy tesco stuff when my mk2 gets back.

I tended to use vpower diesel for the mk1 tdi and found it burnt cleaner (less black smoke out the back) so became my fuel of choice.

I cannot remember the last time I used anything other than supermarket fuel, petrol and diesel, here and abroad, lots of different cars, never had any problems - hastily throws a load of salt over shoulder and crosses fingers.

I use Tesco momentum. As a trial I ran Shell Vpower and the car ran lumpier and I didn't see any gains in MPG so went back to Tesco :)

I run a 2000 reg Suzuki Jimny off roader that is heavily modified as a toy / greenlaner and we've not long replaced the Mrs E46 325i with her Mk2 Octavia vRS petrol.

Both the Jimny and the 325i were run soley on Tescos 95 Ron unleaded but both threw up an engine light with a code relating to lambda sensors.

I was able to get the Beemer's sensors tested on BMW kit for free by a family friend who'd just set up as an independent. There was nothing wrong with them or the cats.

He couldn't fathom it out but I'd solved the issue with the Jimny by swapping to branded fuels. I got the Mrs to do the same and the eml never came on again in 40k miles.

Neither has the Jimny's for that reason.

Take from that what you will but 2 cars didn't like it.

We've been running the vRS on mainly branded 95 but the odd full tank of Shell V Power 98 Ron. It seems happy.

I'm not sure if it's faster on the 98 Ron or if it's a placebo effect but it feels better. That could be throttle response and /or power but I don't drive it enough to know as it's just much faster than my E46 320i auto or the slow off roader!

Most cars will run quite happily on standard supermarket petrol or diesel ... I'd say only if you've a slightly higher performance engine or a remapped engine then possibly a higher octane fuel might be beneficial... Then again a regular dose of Redex to clean the injectors or an octane booster can do the same job cheaper
