odd noise 2.0 tdi mk3 engine Alternator pulley ??

Featured Replies

just had this car under 2 weeks and noticed it makes this catching sound , as if something is out of balance around the Auxilliary pulley area, skoda Technician told me there is a technical service bulletin out on the Alternator pulley, anyone else have knowledge of this phenomena in the 2.0 150 bhp euro 6 diesel engine ?

Car is 26,000 mile skoda approved superb estate 2017 full service History just had the pre sale multi point check as well that Skoda Approved cars undergo.

Thanks in advance anyone who can offer any advice.

Possibilities -

* Alternator clutch pulley on the blink (the pulley on the Alternator will freewheel in one direction and lock in the other. The purpose is to reduce vibrations in the belt with changes in Alternator load and RPM, These have a habit of developing noisy faults).

* Belt tensioner not working correctly (losing its tension and the belt is flapping about a little)

Either way these are not normally expensive issues.

Sounds to me like a belt/pulley based noise.

Nice Crocks! :)

Well spotted I bet you have got your snipers Chit  :) I get loads of stick for wearing crocks by my mates , but I love them for knocking about the house in, better than slippers :)

I spoke to a skoda technician at my local dealership and he said theres a tech bulletin out about the alternator pulley, he said to book it in so I went back to reception and booked it in for monday. I told the service receptionist that the car is still under warranty and she said "It depends what it is" well an Alternator pulley should be covered as its not mentioned under parts not covered due to "fair wear and tear, brakes clutches etc. I will make a point of saying that they should consult me before any work is carried out to rectify itthe fault so we are clear that its a warranty Job.

Its in their interests to play the game fairly as I will then use them for my Servicing anyway.

Thanks for your input , appreciated

This excellent  explanation of the nuances of the Alternator pulley set up really impressed me for its solid content, thought I would share it as somebody else may be in the same situation.

Glad to see somebody else thinks they are useful bits of footwear, kick em off at the door and keep the carpets /flooring cleaner in the house

Re the video.

Thats how all the Youtube tutorials should be!

No annoying music or intros, first video I have ever watched in its entirety and not fast forwarded, usually the relevant content amongst the umms and the euuhs and the "you guys" is less than 5%.

And I learned something major, been struggling with those tensioners for years and never knew you could use a locking pin!!!

I didnt realise there was a locking pin either , been a while since I was a mechanic though - model T fords  were my speciality :D

I normally use a small Philips head screwdriver for that task.

Just for comparison purposes I have recorded my engine when warm and the chattering noise which is  an entirely different noise  from when cold. it goes into main agents locally on Monday, after one of the technicians had a listen last week and said there was a technical service bulletin out on the noisey alternator pulley. he told me to book it in, its still under warranty so hopfully they can rectify it.

Hi - I have just come across this thread as i am trying to get my local dealer to deal with my noise (a military exercise so far).

Did they rectify it - What did they replace ?

Also - Do you know what the technical ref No's are ?

Many thanks in advance

  • 2 weeks later...

Also intrested in the outcome as noticed Mrs 2018 2.0 tdi  22k miles ,made a similar but milder version of that noise earlier when moving it on drive with cold engine.

Hi did you get this sorted mines also doing the same?

Does anyone knows the reference of the Tech Bulletin for this alternator pulley?

It could be interesting to mention its reference when booking a slot by one's local dealer. At least, when you mention such information, the dealer is less tempted to fool you... ;)

sounds  normal for a 150 tdi engine with the bonnet open,  these engines seem to get a touch louder as the miles go on them.

my money is on them finding nothing wrong with it

To be fair they wouldn't find anything wrong with it even if there was 🤣

At 12 months since the opening post then if the attitude of his dealer is any indication of the potential outcome then either they told him it was normal and to go away, or that it wasn't normal but not covered under warranty...

I don't care what it is, I've had the car for 10 days, whatever it is you're fixing it for free.

@johnny cabbage head, care to enlighten us?

sorry for the glacial response on this had a few Bereavements in the family over the last few years.

Anyway  Main Agents phoned to say they were changing the cambelt and tensioner , I found out there was a TSB on this problem, they replaced belt and tensioner, but the noise is /was still there and was apparently the oil /Vacc pump drive which was still there 25.000 trouble free miles later, I traded it in last week for the new sportline plus superb estate with another newer type 150 bhp Diesel engine, I just noticed a slight squeaking down the pulley side of the engine  on this replacement car from a cold start, I dont know if there are any service bulletins out on this noise , its just about perceptable to my ear, the cars only done 11,000 miles from new.

I will keep an ear/eye out on it .
