1.2 HTP Timing chain TPI number

Featured Replies

Can anyone help with posting the correct TPI number for the rattling timing chains on the 1.2 HTP engine. I have the TPI number 2026513/5 but I believe this is for the 1.2 TSI engine.

My local dealer is refusing to admit that there has been problems with the timing chains and its down to wear and tear. They even charged me an hours labour to listen to the chain but not inspect it and the car is still under an approved used warranty.

No problems with HTP engines AFAIK. Unless oil changes have been neglected or incorrect oil used then these chains/tensioners are normally good for life.

But for a definitive answer, log on to Erwin (official Skoda workshop info)

You are required to register, it is a paid for service available to anyone, one hour at €7 and you can download full workshop instructions, TPIs etc that are specific to your particular VIN.

Thanks xman but this is not what I have been reading on other posts on here. many people have been having problems with the HTP timing chain or am I missing something.

Don't confuse 1.2 HTP 3 cylinder n/a engines with 1.2tsi 4 cylinder turbo charged engines.

Please link the relevant posts. There are tons on the EA111 TSi engines (cbza/cbzb/caxa etc), but maybe only one or two on the HTP engines that I can ever remember, and IIRC they had dubious service history.

I am very interested because I currently run a number of cars with both HTP and TSI engines and have been very active in contributing my knowledge here as someone who has battled Skoda over the years on this matter when one of our fleet (2011 1.2 tsi cbzb 105ps) suffered from this issue. In the end, I paid to have the chain changed.

Erwin will give you any TPI that is applicable to your particular VIN, this is the same system that Skoda dealers access, if it has no TPI against your car, then the dealer cannot process it. He will not be paid by Skoda UK for speculative work.

If, in your opinion, your car has developed a fault, that should be covered by your used warranty, (Consumer Rights Act 2015 too if under 6 months since purchase). If the dealer won't agree, seek a second opinion from a qualified engineer and write to your warranty provider.

but not inspect it

It's a biiiig job to inspect it. The whole alloy timing chain cover would have to come off. It would be almost as quick to actually replace the chain and tensioner while the cover was off.

MATTI, I don't think there is an intrinsic problem with the chains or tensioners on the HTP engines. They were good. As xman says, it's only largely neglected engines that suffered. Of course, understand that having a timing chain instead of a belt does not automatically mean you won't get the odd failure. I suspect that is what you have read about. Nothing is absolutely fault free. If you suspect an issue with yours then pursue the matter. Is yours noisy? If so, is it at start up or when it's hot?
