What oil for 1.0 TSI 110?

Just got a new SE with the 1.0 110 engine. It came with a bottle of VW504/507 oil and I'm just checking it's the right grade, for if-and-when. So this is what the manual says on the topic of engine oil:

The hell? Talk about unhelpful. The next paragraph:

If this oil is not available, other oils can also be refilled. To prevent engine damage, a maximum of 0.5 l of engine oil with the following specifications may be used until the next oil change: VW 504 00, VW 502 00, VW 508 00, ACEAA3/ACEA B4 or API SN, (API SM).

So basically all current VW spec oils for petrol (502, 504 and 508) count as 'other' oils suitable only for limited top-up? Seriously?!

 

Skoda, if you're listening: this is not good enough. WRITE BETTER OWNER'S MANUALS!

The oil you need is 0w20 508.00

Thats what I put in my fabia SE L 1.0TSI 95

I am in exactly same position as you - 2018 1.0 Fabia Estate SE 110 . Just telephoned the dealer from whom I purchased the car and they say they use Castrol Edge 5W/30

They might still be using VW 504 / 507 so 5w 30 FS III     (Still with MPI's it is VW504 / 507.)

but they should be asking now if the owner wants VW 508/509  so 0w 20 FS IV.

 

Eventually they will catch on, after all it is just their full time job.

The 1.0 TSI's engine Fabias with GPF should be getting the VW508 /509 now, but servicing costs might rise,

only those trying the different oils will know if there is any difference in fuel economy.

They just went VW508 / 509 for WLTP Certification and the RDE figures.

So, what oil are the factory putting in? I've got a bottle of 5w30 too, I bet at first service they use 5w30 as well?

For about 18 months the factory has been putting in 0w 20 FS IV just incase any random vehicles being imported to EU countries are retested on import and have to be able to replicate the WLTP Certification.

I wouldn't bother. 

The VW508 /509 is a stupid price.

 

If you love your car or have it as a keeper maybe don't use long life oil or variable servicing at the next service, so no VW504 / 507 or VW508 /509.

Just go VW 502 so 5w 40 FS or 0w 40 FS and Fixed Servicing. 

 

Service department just confirmed it's 5w30. Makes sense to me as that's what the 1.0tsi was originally designed to use.

No not designed to use just 5w 30 FS III.

 

That is the recommended Spec that allows Variable / Flexible Servicing and what main dealership use, have in bulk.

 

The Engines are designed to use Oil to VW 502 if doing Fixed Servicing and VW504 / 507 for Fixed Servicing or Variable.

Now with GPF's and WLTP Approval VW Group Recommend VW508 / 509

 

But then VW Group have no interest in Cars / Engines out of Warranty at 2, 3 or 5 years.   Long Life Oil and short life Engines never bothers them.

Time will tell how Euro 6 3 cylinder 1.0 TSI engines are at 6 years old or older and at 120,000 miles plus.

Lots will be fine, millions even, some will be gubbed.

Skoda UK confirm it's VW508, but their dealers will be putting in 5w30 at first service because no ones told them! That's my conclusion anyway!

The Fixed Price Service prices on cars from 3-10 years will increase, already the Oil / Filter change has gone from £100 to £119.

It's not gone up because of the VW508 oil! I've contacted three separate dealers, all said they use VW504. So, despite Skoda saying use 508, your dealer won't listen! I'm happy with the 504 5w30, I don't care if using that increases emmisions and it won't cause engine damage. Just a shame the dealers don't appear to have been told.

You maybe missed me saying they will increase.   Who knows when, but it will happen.

 

The Fixed Price Servicing Offers were on 3-10 year old cars, and there are no TSI or TDI that VW Group started using 0w 30 FS IV oil in 3 years old yet.

Come time Service Desk staff will start telling people / customers about the Special Oil required and this costs so much extra etc etc.

Some already have done this then it turns out all the Special Oil that was used was VW 504 / 507 and not 'Special' or more expensive.

Don't forget that Petrol Particulate Filters require a very low ash oil which the 508 is. Mostly, these PPF cars haven't been out very long, mostly since September last year, and even then some manufacturers didn't manage that deadline. So most dealers are just on the cusp of taking in the VW508 oils as they haven't been needed en-mass. The VW508 oils will give your PPF the best service life. The Citroen range had PPF's fitted from April 2018 and were ahead of the pack. Cars before that will be fine on the earlier VW504/507 oils, and you should be able to top up small amounts on the new PPF cars with that oil if your manual says so. The cost of the low ash 508 oils and all of these newer oils is generally higher due to the extra refining and additive costs. It has no detrimental effect on engine life.

The correct spec Oil certainly should not have any detriment on engine life.

Long life / variable / flexible servicing using the Long Life oil might do with 1.0 TSI with GPF as now WLTP Certificated.

This maybe so, but all three dealers I contacted are using 5w30 vw504 oil on the newer cars. So, when you get it serviced you won't get vw508!

If you want VW508 / 509 you can have it.  If they don't have it in, or want to bother their backend.

 

Supply it yourself in un-opened containers and it might well not cost you much more than the £12 or so plus VAT they put on the invoice.

Then it will be the correct oil used at a Skoda Dealer Network Workshop.

 

Or just go with the flow, let them do as they want.

They like their mark up.

when my fabia SE L 1.0 tsi went for it first service in march the dealer put the VW 504.00 oil in my fabia 1.0 TSI i said to them it the wrong oil oil you need the vw 508,00 oil they said no the vw 504.00 is ok. so i went away with in 5 days i lost 3 MPG and was down on power i ring the dealer to say the cars not right and its coming back to them so they can do the service right so got a new oil filter and some vw 508,00 oil when back and make them change it with in a week the car was back to full health .

i've talked to the dealer a lot as i get on with them and they sad i was not the only one with a 10 TSI to come back with problems after a service so now they put in VW 508.00 in all 1.0 and 1.5 TSI

Rsrob, does you car have a GPF/PPF? I'm guessing probably not if you were serviced in March. If not, it won't make any difference to the performance. During the testing we did, no performance drop was ever noticed but increased ash content was discovered in the catalytic converter which would eventually impact on the GPF/PPF. It would take quite a time though for any ash issue to surface. If you use the right oil for any GPF/PPF equipped car you won't get any issues with the Cat or GPF/PPF.

Just a shame the dealers aren't updating the servicing, surely Skoda should be telling them? Mines on long life service, but I'll be doing my own oil change at 9500 miles anyway.

VW Group went 0w 20 FS IV to be getting the sort of WLTP / RDE figures they really needed. 

(Saved the cheating that might have been done with some EU Tests on Euro 5 & Euro 6, VW, SEAT  & Audi Petrol & Diesels.

 

It is VW 508 /509  & that 509  so 0w 20 FS IV in the TDI's with SCR. 

(No longer needing to put diesel in the engine oil of TDI's at EU Testing facilities, not that VW Group ever did that....)

 

It was much as Toyota did after 2010 when the 1.0 cylinder engines had gone Euro 4 to 5, then Owner complained of higher Fuel Consumption with the newer cars over the ones they had previously. (The Euro 4's did have EGR issues though.)

Toyota then changed the Oil for the Euro 5's from the at Launch Recommended 5w 30 FS LL to 0w 30 FS LL.

I had a Toyota IQ at that time as the Service Advice changed.

yes my fabia has a GPF as i have a 1.0 95 PS TSI in it all i can say is it when for its first service in good working order and was not the same car after service 

I've ordered a litre of the vw508 oil for only £14, from a skoda dealer so it can be found cheap.

There was VW508 / 509 on sale from an Audi Dealership @ £7  a litre bottle delivered.

It was getting near it's Sell Buy date or was it a Use By / Fill by.
