Hard Wired Dash Cam and DAB interference

Featured Replies

Finally took delivery of my Kodiaq yesterday and hard wired the Dash Cam I used in my Yeti this morning.  It's piggy backed off the fuse for the rear wiper and earthed to the chassis bolt next to the fuse box.

I wired in a 12/24v Step down converter (HERE)  that outputs 5V/3A via a USB socket then used a long (not sure how long 3-4M I'd guess) USB cable which is run up the passenger pillar (Left Hand Side) and across the top of the windscreen.

When the Dash Cam is plugged in the DAB reception drops to the point where channels go silent, the second I unplug it they come back.

I'm going to assume it interference and not power draw, I've routed the way I've seen others do it on forums. Anyone have a clue if a better, shielded, USB cable would fix this or is it the Step Down converter - both are equally 'cheap'?

Slightly different scenario but I had the same issue in my 2011 VW Passat whenever I had a phone plugged into a USB charger in the 12v lighter socket the DAB reception would drop. I never got to the bottom of it and put it down to some sort of power draw issue.

Have put a dash cam in my Fabia today but not yet hard wired.

The DAB radio no longer works but if I unplug the rear cam from the front dash cam then DAB reception is OK again. Obviously the cable to the rear camera is interfering with the DAB received. The cable is routed along the passenger side roof lining (right hand drive vehicle).

I am going to try moving the cable to the driver's side and see if that makes any difference as I have read suggestions that the receiver is on the near side of the vehicle but would like to get definite conformation before I do move the cable.

I have the same with a high amp usb cig socket but a standard 1.2amp or whatever it is was fine . Same thing happened in my old Audi never did get to the bottom of it or a solution unfortunately

Exactly same problem in my Kodiaq....anyone found a work around or should I just remove the rear cam?

I hard wired the camaera Viofoa129 but never bothered to swap the cable to the drivers side as due to health reasons (recovering from Leukaemia) the car is currently mostly driven by my daughter who uses her phone to play music rather than listen to the radio.

I understand that the DAB receiver could be in the rear screen window and so the camera is likely to always interfere with DAB. I did put some ferrite cores around the cable but this did not help. I emailed the service department of the garage that supplied vehicle asking for confirmation of the location of the DAB receiver bit they did not bother to reply.
