Close encounters of the coiled kind (could have been: 'The curse of Optimuk')

Featured Replies

Yep, took my Octavia vRS out today and with in 5 minutes it started to hesitate and chug like a Diesel (sorry Fab vRS owners, couldn't resist:D). Then to my horror, having only had the car for 4 weeks or so (I've done 3000 miles, got 36K on the clock), the engine management light came on. So, pulled over on busy ring road, called Skoda Assist [AA really].

SA, sorry, AA came and analysed a broken coil (no clacking sound when they lifted up #4). My dealer assured me they'd already been changed on this car once, but what with? Anyway, I paid the AA

Rich, did you keep the one which was replaced? If so, you will be able to see the part number on it. It would be interesting to know which version it is. The dealer price for the L version which the AA should have fitted is

Oh the Optimuk comment. I filled up with my FIRST tank of Optimax on friday. Since then I've done 100 miles' date=' so when the judder started I first thought of the scooby-engine-dying episode I'd read about here. Fortunately, that's not the problem, but maybe I'll try BP Ultimate in future to put off my fears.

No harm done then.

Dodgimax did not contribute to the demise of the engine in my Impreza. Well possibly, it might have quite possibly led to the unexpected detonation which coincidentally caused it to break and no-one else came up with a better explanation that fitted the facts at the time.

I've also tried Ultimate which seems to be a rebranded, greener SUL rather than a power-trip fuel. Seems fine and just like any other SUL like Esso or Texaco supply.

Well, The one taken out of my car appears to be an 'H' version, part No. 06B 905 115H, to be exact (it has the longer rectangle running down plastic lid, as seen in the gallery). Now the new one in my car appears to be an 'L' part (the box says part No. 06B 905 115L). The reason I say 'appears to be' is because when the AA gentleman called another unit to bring the new coil, he held the new and old one next to each other and said 'they've got the same part number', going by what is actually on the plastic/rubber itself. I didn't actually get a chance to verify this for myself (they just looked the same), so now it is hidden in the engine, on the cylinder furthest to the right looking into the bay, which means it is covered by some engine unit, and is therefore not directly visible.

As for the price you mention (

Rich , if the rest of the coilpacks are H's , then I suggest you take your car back to the dealer and get them replaced with L's . I had mine changed last week .
