Boot bicycle carrier

Hi, I wondered if any Kodiaq owners have used one of the bicycle racks in the link below. If so, would you recommend them? If you wouldn’t recommend them, which bicycle rack would you recommend that doesn’t break the bank. Thanks

I wanted to get a boot/tailgate rack as well as my set-up has a roof box and large cargo bike on the roof, and I wasn't going to pay €850 for a towbar and a further €400 for a towbar carrier.  When I was researching there seems to be little or no options to say that boot racks fit the Kodiaq except for that one website you mentioned above. I took a gamble and ordered the Menabo Polaris 3 https://www.rameder.eu/bike-carrier-f-lli-menabo-polaris-152868-37164-1.html which arrived yesterday and I assembled last night - seems good quality to be fair!

Now only issue is I haven't got my Kodiaq yet, should be ready to pick-up from the dealer this weekend/early next week but I'll be happy to let you know! I will say on the settings chart included in the box there was no mention of Skoda Kodiaq (this is where you need to know the numbers to set certain parts at particular lengths etc). So I've emailed Menabo to ask them for clarification - hopefully it will work but might need to figure out the right dimensions to set the rack at myself.

Only other issue I can forsee will be disabling the electronic tailgate but apparently this can be done easily.

So if you're not in a major rush hang on a few days and I'll let you know how I get on!

For reference here's a video I made last year on my set-up on my outgoing Skoda Octavia Estate VRS and hence the need for boot-rack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE_RX2nPzFE

* Update - just received email from Menabo saying it does fit and these are the right settings:

Thats great and thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I don't have my Kodiaq yet either but due end of month. It'd be great if you could update me when you get yours and try it out.

No probs mate. Probably be about a week. By the way I got my rack through Amazon and it was a bit cheaper.

Mounting bikes on the boot lid isn't ideal.

How often will you be mounting it? A fixed towbar can be had for £400, plus £250 for a towbar mounted bike carrier, a relatively small price to pay for the additional security and flexibility?

Got the car yesterday - wow, incredible! I'll have a look a that boot rack tonight or tomorrow and get back to ya....

First time I've seen the dedicated smaller SportLine rear mudflaps fitted . Skoda really need to develop a front mud flap that can be fitted in conjunction with the running boards.

I'm biased, but I'm a big fan of the running boards, they really finish off the Kodiaq really nicely.

You've done well lasting as long as you have, but the engine would have still been warm whilst I was removing the garage's sticker in the rear window :D

Yes, to be honest I'll be surprised if they are effective at all!

Running boards cost me an extra €850 which is ridiculous really, but we have a young one and seeing him get in and out of it yesterday using the boards validated them. We put a lot of stuff on the roof but you still need to open the door to be able to get your foot on the board, so in some ways negates their need for this purpose - still as you say really finishes the car too!

That's tonight's job! As good a dealer as they are not a fan of the stickers!

The running boards are expensive, until you see how much better they are compared to the very many cheaper aftermarket options. They're bespoke to the Kodiaq too, fit perfectly, are properly sealed to the sills and don't require any cutting. Money well spent in my opinion...

Absolutely agree. These boot mounted contraptions are pretty poor in my personal experience. Generally end up scuffing the paint where they hook the edges of the boot. Not overly stable either. I got roof bars and have 3 roof mounted Thule carriers.

Defo agree!

Some photos attached - obviously top arm isn't that high, just hasn't got a bike attached to it - fairly easy to set up.

I agree with comments about boot versus towbar but as explained above this is my only option.

I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do - I'm guessing you will be as careful you can when taking that on and off that very, very nice looking Sportline...

And don't park it in any of the Dublin shopping centres with that kit on it. I can already see a squad of little sh1tes (sorry, meant "unaccompanied minors")  using it as a climbing frame!

I do like those OEM running boards you have.  Just today i was looking at a Kodiaq Style that was parked beside me - it had the aftermarket ones.  They look out of place and are too much of a chunky looking add on.  And when I looked underneath to see the fitting quality, I threw up and pooh'd a little. The underbody covers were hack sawed to bits and the metalwork looked like salvage from the Titanic.  Rusted to ***k on 2018 Reg...  😣

For supporting the weight of 3 bikes that looks really precarious. Are they really loaded that high up? What secures the rack from swaying side to side?

The running boards do look good. I’ll probably ask the dealer to fit them on mine - will be useful with a 6 year old, 18 month old and a short arse wife!

  • 2 weeks later...

I would not attach that contraption to the rear of my Kodiaq in all honesty. Appreciate each to their own.
