aircon recharge

Featured Replies

after getting an aircon recharge   mm its much cooler when driving but when

i come in to the car the next time inside the car smells of old socks how can i get rid of this bad smell is their any filters i should change or what should i do

DO THIS IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE!

1. Get a bottle of 99%+ methylated spirit (alcohol).

2 put it in a pump spray bottle.

Image result for pump spray

3. Run the air-con system on max cooling for a wile so its wet inside (5 min). Then with the highest fan setting and with the doors open ...

4. Open the glove box and remove the air filter.

5. With your head outside the car :) mist the alcohol (go for the finest spray setting) through the inlet in the glovebox where the filter was. This should now be sucking in air from the slot (strongly). Run about 250 - 300 ml. While you are doing this keep an eye out for any dribbles etc on vents and wipe it up.

6. Stop the fans as soon as you stop spraying and let it sit overnight. You want the internal pipework, radiators and drainage channels to be wet with alcohol. So don't run the fans after you stop spraying.

This should kill the bacteria / mold causing the smell.

7. Next day, reassemble the filter, open all the windows and run around the block with the fan running.

The smell will be coming from bacteria growing around the evaporator area (radiator that exchanges heat in the dash with cold), where it gets wet with condensation. Not likely the air filter.

NOTES: Alcohol is non-conductive, non-corrosive and so is safe for all the internal electronics.

If that fails you can get products to flush the evaporator.

EDIT: I see you are in Scotland. No Irn-Bru is not an acceptable alternative to Metho. And yes your car will smell like a distillery for a day or so, so will blend right in :)
