Lane keep assist maxi dot colours

Featured Replies

Hi all! I've recently upgraded from a late-2015 Octavia (the 'Ambition Plus' model out here in Australia), to a late-2018 Kodiaq. Wow - big changes all around. The highlight is definitely ACC - radar following traffic in front is just awesome, both on a motorway and in school run traffic. Aus spec Kodiaqs are roughly equivalent to Editions in the UK I think - all 4x4, 2.0 TSI jobs. Our particular model doesn't have the digital dash, just a colour maxi dot. It's a nice improvement over the monochrome maxi dot in the Octavia. Seems a little slower to change the display though. And we got the 'luxury pack' - a bunch of safety bells & whistles, with surround view (amazing) and traffic jam assist.

I was really looking forward to lane keep and TJ assist. The lane tracking isn't quite as good as I'd hoped - gives it a few more years for the tech to catch up I guess. It seems like most vehicles are in a similar place right now, with the exception of Tesla. But it's still spookily cool when it does find the lane and track it.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was this: does anyone else find it odd that Skoda chose to make the 'vehicle has found lanes and is actively tracking them' lane marking colours yellow on the LKA assist display on the maxidot...but the 'LK assist' tiny icon at the bottom of the display green? So, when it's working you get two nice thick yellow lines in the centre (meaning 'good'), and a green icon at the bottom. And then when it stops tracking...the yellow lines go white...and the little icon goes yellow (now meaning 'bad')! Seems a bit mix & match?! I'd vote for consistency in colours: green=good, yellow='pay attention you numpty' 🙂  What do you all think?

The green icon at the bottom just tells you Lane Assist is turned on. I guess it's designed to match the colour of the icons on the light switch and regular cruise control etc. i.e. green = 'on'.

As @silver1011 says, the icon at the bottom of the icon tells you that Lane Assist is on.

Lane Assist itself has two modes - normal and adaptive. You can turn the adaptive bit on/off in the settings on the infotainment unit somewhere. When adaptive is off, the lines in the maxidot turn white when the Lane Assist has found something to track (e.g. lane marking or kerb). It needs a better ‘something’ for it to turn yellow, which is does when the adaptive bit is turned on.

The difference is that the normal mode will only adjust the steering when you get to the lane boundary - so if you did leave it to it, it would just bounce between the left and right sides of the lane and get you pulled over for looking like a drunk driver. The adaptive bit tries a little harder to keep you in the middle of the lane, and so does a lot more steering for you. I find it’s actually rather good... and pretty quick at finding a lane marking (or kerb) to track, but that’s because all the roads in the UK are like race tracks and have really clear markings 😂😂.

Yep, absolutely makes sense that they'd do it like that for the little icon at the bottom. I guess I was more thinking about using yellow as the highlight colour on the lane markers during adaptive tracking. Maybe some UI design thing - find something that stands out, that is also ok for colour blind people, that works on the maxi dot...etc etc. I wouldn't like to the be the product manager designing something like that!

Ahh, that's interesting about the difference between normal and adaptive modes - thanks! Ha, it's probably fair to say that the general state of Sydney roads leaves something to be desired 😃 It does work reasonably well on a motorway with good lane markings. Should use that as an excuse to do a few longer trips...
