Skoda Fabia 1.6 TDI 2011 Revs into red zone and dies

Featured Replies

My son was visiting us last weekend in his Skoda Fabia 1.6 TDI 2011. After 10 miles on the M62 the engine Revs just raced up into the red zone without any acceleration or warning lights.

He put it into neutral whereupon the revs increased even more. Luckily he managed to get to the hard shoulder. After 5 minutes he started the engine again and within a few moments  the engine Revs just raced up into the red zone again. He switched off quickly and tried again 10 minutes later and the engine would not start.

The vehicle had to be recovered and he has been told he may need a new engine and he is gutted.

How could this happen? Regularly serviced, checked oil and water before leaving, no warning signs or lights showing beforehand, no limp mode!

Any advice/recommendations warmly welcomed.

So what miles has the car done, & has it had the VW Emissions fix carried out, so new Engine Management and the Flow Device fitted?

?

What is wrong with it that it requires a new engine, what has the Technician / mechanic said happened.

?

The Engine oil was not full of diesel was it?

Sounds like a runaway diesel, but that's unmistakable as there would be clouds of smoke? Could be seized throttle linkage or similar.

Diesel runaway?

Wow, fantastic response ... thanks!

Only 60K miles. No VW Emissions carried out.

The oil did have diesel in it, and there were small pools of diesel around the injectors.

There WAS lots of white smoke coming out of the exhaust at the time.

The mechanic offered my son £150 for the car and said the cost of supplying a new engine would be more than the car was worth. That's when he contacted me.

What is "Diesel runaway"?

Is it fixable? Costly?

Cheers

That Mechanic was a generous barsteward.   Nothing like turning a disaster into a payday for yourself.  Every cloud and all that.

Hopefully someone here can point you in the right direction of someone that can be trusted, trusted to source an engine if an engine is required.

@bozzmike - I'm afraid that sounds like a runaway to me too. Sight unseen I'd be expecting to find major internal damage, like bent and/or stretched con-rods, bent crankshaft, possibly bent valves. Your cheapest bet is getting a secondhand or rebuilt unit from someone who's prepared to warranty the replacement for several months.

OK. The VAG engineer told me it had two faulty injectors which needed to be replaced at a cost of £750. Where would I stand if this did not resolve the problem? Is it normal to replace oil and oil filter and clear out the inter cooler when replacing injectors? The bill is gradually increasing.

The oil has diesel in it and needs replacing as does the filter.  £20 oil, £6 Oil Filter, £2 Sump Plug.
