Leaking steering fluid following steering rack replacement

Featured Replies

Hi guys, first post in here. currently driving a 1.9tdi Octavia on 04 plate. Fair to say it has given me some problems over the years, but I love it and it still drives pretty well.

So, had to have the steering rack replaced as the old one had split. took it to a local garage, and the owner admitted he'd never changed one, and none of his mechanics had either.

According to him, they are bomb proof (not mine though).

Had it done mid March, and I've now had to top the damn fluid up twice since then as it's steadily leaking. Can see on the driveway at home and where I park at work that it's definitely leaking!!

My question is (before I call them to have a look over it) is it likely to poor fitting on their behalf? I'm sure it's too much of a coincidence that in 7 years it has never leaked, and now I've had this work done, it's steadily leaking fluid.

Any info would be greatly received, as I'm not gonna be happy about shelling out more cash for it to be fixed - thanks

I'm guessing this should be in the Octavia 1 section.

Without seeing the car it's impossible to say if it's down to them. Did they replace the seals on the pipes? It's not rocket science to change the rack, about as basic as they come.

That said I've seen some god awful re manufactured racks that are basically steam cleaned and painted black. **** everywhere when fitted, cheap ain't always the best.

Also uneducated morons using ATF or similar to fill the system up too.

MK2 Octavia has elctro-mechanical power steering, so no fluid to leak. Your fluid must be something else, brake/clutch or engine/gearbox?

I'd concur with Tech1e's comments, with the added note that I wondered about the pipe unions not being done up properly too.
