timing chain failure

Featured Replies

Morning all,

My 2010 VRS started to rattle on start up, got a price to change chain etc and then boom car ran lumpy etc so I plugged it in came up with the fault code cam shaft sensor out of sync.Had it lifted to my local vw specialist and told 4k for a rebuild, so I'm looking to get a recon engine. Need some advice of engine suppliers that haven't been on crime watch etc so if anybody has been supplied a recon engine recommendations would be appreciated. Sorry if this has been post previous from other members.

cheers mike

Those early edition tensioners are a certain failure, much earlier than anyone would reasonably expect.

There are some posts of engine rebuilders, exchange but the search is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes better results from google with briskoda octavia 2 in the search text.  I'll try and look later in the evening.

Edit: One thread here. If you don't know, the 1.8TSI and 2.0TSI EA888 engines are very similar. So, a rebuilder experienced in those, ought to be able to deal with the 2.0TSI

Cheers,

I got fed up looking at dodgy rebuilders found one decent one but wanted 3k plus vat so got myself a used engine on 52k from a 2012 vrs, so waiting for the wife to calm down so I can buy it lol

yes, there are losts of dodger rebuilders, and not so many good ones!  Sounds ok. If it after first quarter 2012, you shouldn't need to update the tensioner.  If before that date, I still would! If not private, what did it cost?

Blimey it continues that engine £1200 delivered but looked at reviews and not so good plus they wanted me to do a bacs transfer if I paid by credit card they could only deliver to my address and not the garages. I found some one in Dartford who will do a rebuild for £1500 plus vat with 1 year guarantee or £2400 supply and fit with a 2 year guarantee. so still pulling my hair out lol

A used engine is a gamble. But if it works out, it is a good alternative. If it doesn't, you;ve thrown money away. It is all about how much you can lose and if it is acceptable to risk it!

A 2nd quarter mfr 2012 onwards is a good bet. But until you get it in the car and drivel 500 miles or whatever, you are living in the land of crossed finger.  Presumably their warranty would not cover installation / removal costs.    As you are trying to mitigate risks by using credit card, you could pay for the onward freight and arrange yourself from your premises to Garage. Or get garage to purchase on their business card, registered to their work address, and include a little something for them and make the transfer to them. Of course, you would need them to commence credit card proceedings if the engine was shot.

Ok done! engine on the way getting delivered to garage, I paid by PayPal so it could be delivered to the garage just had to change primary address. I do have a warranty with the engine plus the garage luckily know what they are doing so fingers crossed should be fine. will change the chain etc before fitment plus a new clutch as its out of the car plus other parts cleaned and checked before being reinstalled. Then my weekend car back on the road and I can escape from the wife lol. Will update when on the road which will be next week. cheers

I had a Golf Mk2 16v Gti that blew its engine (I had a big hand/foot in that occurrence ) lol

Got a 2nd hand engine from a breaker. That was knackered- white metal bearings had gone so had to get another 2nd hand engine and put that in. At least I heard that one running and drove the donor car so knew it was ok.

Its always a gamble.
