Loss of power at 70mph, white smoke, tow truck...

Driving along at 70mph on Friday night at the car suddenly stuttered, then lost all power. EPC light came on, as well as a flashing EML. White smoke out the exhaust too. 

 

I coasted into the hard shoulder and shut it off. I made one attempt to turn it over, but it wouldn't start.

 

I'm fearing the worst 😶 It's 2.0TSI with the full chains and tensioners replaced a few months ago in my ownership, as well as an intake manifold and water pump more recently.

 

Had to dump it at a local garage with the tow truck on Friday, who are hoping to squeeze it on Tuesday for diagnosis. But in the mean time, I managed to do a VCDS scan of the engine module as below. Any idea if the below points to anything in particular? Is there any chance it's NOT going to be a totally wrecked engine?!

 

I had noticed a system too rich or too lean pop up once since the manifold replacement, but the others are all new (and all seem to appear at the same time)

Those codes don't necessarily suggest timing failure to me. Could be an injector or fuel system fault perhaps. Let us know how it goes.

I've just dug back through the history and realised it had injector 3 fail about 20k ago. Weirdly, the VW main dealer only replaced 1, 2 and 3 as a result, not all 4!

 

If this is now injector 4 going bad, is it possible the engine could be OK?

 

I only had the intake manifold and water pump done a few weeks back...wish I'd just replaced that last injector then 😭

Turns out it was indeed injector 4 going wonky, which is a relief. A nice waste of £400 to fix it!

Better than £4k new engine though! Strange they replaced 3 of 4!
