Manufactured hole in exhaust box

Featured Replies

Have noticed Superb estate 1.4se sounds like its struggling. Also sounds a bit growly when engine slows down. Had a look at exhaust at w/e. Found a 'precise' hole in the back box on the side that faces the road. Should that hole be there?

Probably a water drain hole.

How big is it?

Thanks Wino. It is about a couple of mm across.

Yeah, sounds about right for a drain.

Much appreciated. Have a good day.

My 1.4 is silent when slowing down unless you are using lots of high rev engine braking to slow the car on steep hills- as I have been today - am in the Lake District at the mo! You can hear a little induction noise if you floor the throttle but under normal driving the engine is near silent.

Few thoughts:-

  • Was the car OK before-? what has been done since? Mention even if you think it is not relevant.
  • re all the engine/gearbox mounts in good condition?
  • Is the exhaust/catalyst OK - I've know a catalyst core collapse on another type of car and partially block the exhaust.
  • Any codes showing? this engine has a timing chain and also variable valve timing and if this has gone wrong in some way with this lot then valve timing may be "out"

Just realised this thread has been posted under the Superb MKI forum, this will be a MKII

Many thanks.

My 1.4 is a 65 plate 7 speed auto. 44,000 miles. Am sorry. Not sure what Mk it is.....

The silence of the drive on the flat, up or down hill, has gone.

Car was ok before. No error codes. Also had a diagnostics test too with no issue revealed.

Have visually examined the engine and exhaust as best as. Not sure how I can check the catalyst.

Sounds like a mkIII - I think the mkII 1.4 was manual only and the mkIII was introduced in 2015

👍 many thanks. Hope you have a good w/e.

Just had a thought - as yours is the MKIII Superb with EA211 cambelt 1.4tsi engine and a DSG gearbox then it will be fitted with a Dual Mass Flywheel (the manual gearbox versions are not) - could this be potentially the issue?

Car going in for 'long service' tomorrow. Will mention this to the Skoda mechanics. Thank you for your responses. Have a good week.
