As per the title.

 

When establishing my vehicle tyre size by inputting the model description; Skoda Octavia Scout 2.0TDi 4x4 (2004-2010-2013), most* of the online retailers correctly identify the the tyres as 225/50/17 94W.  And therein lies the problem. 

 

Nearly all of them either do not stock any All Season Tyres in that size, and if they do, not from brands that I would trust on my vehicle; Goodyear, Michelin, Continental et al.  It would also appear that Goodyear do not make the Vector 4 Season G2 in that size.  They do make them in 225/50/17 98V.

 

GIven that 94W equates to a load of 670kg, and speed rating of 168mph, and 98V equates to a load of 750kg, and a speed of 149mph, both of which are well within my vehicles official top speed of 122mph, what, if any, would be the adverse affects of fitting the lower speed rated, but higher load rated tyre to my vehicle?

* when inputting the Scouts details as mentioned above  into the drop down menu on Oponeo it states the original (SUMMER) tyre size as 205/55/R16, and gives alternatives as; 225/45/17, 225/50/17, 225/40/18 and 225/35/19. 

No issues with the higher load rating; the lower speed rating may or may not cause insurance issues but I'd be entirely happy with using it from any technical viewpoint.

The higher load rating will be ok, might make the tyres slightly stiffer

 

Wouldn't worry about a max speed rating of 149mph instead of 168mph  (it goes up in 30km/h or 19mph bands) so may be suitable for bit more than 149mph, but not rated for 168mph as an example

 

For 225 / 50 R17 The Goodyear Gen 2 are available in 2 types : 98V XL and 94V   Cross Climate+ in 3 types : 98V XL, 98H XL and 98W XL runflat and Continental as 98V XL

 

 

Neither load nor speed rating will be a problem. As mentioned the XL could feel a little stiffer / less comfortable.

 

You could run a T-rated tyre as long as you stay within the speed rating. People used to do this with winter tyres and put a sticker into the dash as a reminder.

After getting feedback on the same tyre and sizes from a fellow Octy Scout owner,  I went ahead and purchased a set from KwikFit Mobile for £402 all in, £88-120 less than I was being quoted elsewhere.

The higher the rating ie 94 to 98 means a stiffer sidewall to give it a higher loading, you may notice a firmer ride, more precise handling, perhaps more road noise

The only people who will be concerned about fitting a lower speed (or load) rated tyre will be your insurers. They're they only people you need to ask in this regard, forum experts and their knowledge is not relevant.
