PedalBox + Insurance + Breakdown

Featured Replies

The short story: Chris Knott insured me through Highway Insurance (a division of LV) with the PedalBox mod.

The Long Story:

July is always a financially painful month for me, as bills come in for car insurance, building insurance, birthday celebrations and wedding anniversary in the same two week period. Ouch.

Anyway, I've been with Direct Line since I purchased my Sportline. They haven't had to pick up the phone for me in two years and I have 9 years no claims. This year they bumped up my premium from £384 to £523. A polite phone call resulted in "we don't have to tell you why." So, I left.

The issue of insurance companies and the PedalBox modification has often popped up here, and I have a PedalBox+ on my car. It has been in position for two years and has gone unmentioned by the dealer through two services.

But, I figured my new insurance company should be specifically informed, even though I will never be in an accident or have to make a claim. (insert several pertinent emojis here)

I went on DTUK's website to see what claims they make about the product that might help my case and they said they could recommend insurance companies, so I emailed them. I got a reply next day and Luke@DTUK  said they recommend Greenlight, Adrian Flux, LV, Admiral and Chris Knott. Two of those are listed in Briskoda's insurance forum, so I called them after first going online and ticking boxes with Aviva and LV. I also did the price comparison sites and LV kept coming up the cheapest.

Adrian Flux could not find a quote for me under £600. I wonder if that has to do with 1) they do performance cars and 2) I park on the street in south London. Aviva was over £500 after adding legal and no claims protection. LV was the easiest to deal with online, but Jessica @ Chris Knott found a well specified policy with Highway Insurance for £413 that specifically covers the PedalBox and it is £4 less than LV's offer, even though Highway is part of LV.

So, I can finally catch my breath now and chill 'til next July.

Oh, I meant to ask about breakdown coverage. I've been relying on Skoda's own until now, but that ends in January. Does anyone have any recommendations? Typical costs?

Thanks.

Maybe not relevant (unless you tow a wobble-box) but I have breakdown cover through Green Flag as a Caravan Club member and it's £103/year for the mid-tier level which gives me everything bar extended European cover (meh, who cares) and a chauffeur (I kid you not).

Prior to angering other drives with my reduced speed limit I always went with Green Flag when I wasn't covered by manufacturer provided cover.  AA and RAC were always silly money in comparison.

Thanks! I'll check out Green Flag.

I received an offer to continue the breakdown cover with the AA at a very good reduced rate just before the 3 year warranty/ breakdown cover ran out on my previous Yeti.

Do you get the "Mobility Guarantee" in the UK?  (i.e. when your car is serviced by Skoda you get Roadside Assistance cover for 1 year across Europe)?

Pic from the receipt book on my last €139 Skoda service...

I too was insured with Highway via Chris Knott.  Oddly LV wouldn't insure me at all with a pedalbox on my policy.

As much as you are stressed now just wait 12 months when you get your renewal quote from Chris Knott.  I guarantee it will be almost double what you're paying now.

Sprats & Mackerels.

Still only paying £117 (€130) insurance here in France and effectively no road tax - €99 to register divided by how many years I keep the car so less than £10 per year expected.

You can go off people, know what I mean...

For breakdown cover, I've used AutoAid for years. Claimed/used once and it was painless. FRee spouse cover as well.

+1 for autoaid. Much cheaper. Original usp was you had to pay the mobile nechanic and then claim cost back which presumably reduced silly jobs. Painless when other half had a puncture and couldn't get the wheel off. Came out fixed it, and now mechanic makes his/ her own claim.

Hi.

Sorry we couldn't help out with a more competitive quotation.

Thanks for giving us a try though.

Regards,

Dan.

In case she has a 'breakdown'?

Or is it like a free blanket for the missus?
