ABS Issues, How to tell it is working?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Hope this message finds you well.

I drove our good old skoda octavia to Istanbul from Denmark where I currently study and took it to local mechanics here to freshen it up.

While changing the front coil springs the guys unplugged the brake socket briefly for convenience. This was done while the car key was on the car. Upon completion of the job we have figured out that the abs light was on. They have told me that this was due to the key being mounted on the car when they unplugged the from brake socket briefly. Anyways they connected the car to the computer erased the light and gave the car back to me. Now I doubt whether they were honest and if my abs still really works. How can I be absolutely sure if it is working? I have tried braking hard a couple of times while going 40 50 km/h but I havent noticed anything different. I am a new father so I m a bit worried.

THANSK A LOT IN ADVANCE

All the best

Sounds perfectly plausible to me. If there are warning lights on then I would assume it’s all good.

Well, the warning light doesn't exist any more. It was somehow turned off by the mechanics with a computer connection but the issue is perhaps the trust, I want to be absolutely sure.

Does the light come on with the ignition and then go out?

No. There are no warning lights. It just came on once and the mechanic put it down.

Thanks for your replies.

My brother have convinced me that I really have to kick the breaks for ABS to activate and I am just coming back from a test drive. The ABS is working fine. 😊 It was just me not pushing the breaks hard enough.

@mumutum - The ABS warning light should illuminate as part of the Built In Test Equipment sequence when you switch the ignition on. If it doesn't then you probably have an ABS fault (as if you do it stays on with the engine running). I don't know about Danish law, but if the ABS light doesn't come on during the BITE test, you'd fail the annual UK roadworthyness test.

Thanks a lot for this point.

I had no idea about the meaning of lights illuminated when switching on the ignition.

I never paid attention to this before and don't particularly remember if I ever saw an ABS light there.

Is there a chance that my ABS would still function while the issue you mentioned exists? (problem in the sequence)

Thanks in advance

Ran back to the car and check if the ABS lights comes on when switching on the ignition. It does. 😊 Something new I have learned today.

Well, that means that the ABS has passed the BITE test, and is working.

If the light stays on, presume there is a problem and:-

  1. Check the fuses on top of the battery. Replace any that are broken.
  2. If that doesn't clear the problem, get the fault codes read. It's probably a wheel sensor, but there are 4 of those.
