Oil light not coming on

Featured Replies

Hi, I recently purchased a 2012 Octavia Elegance model. But when I start the car, neither oil light flashes on. The manual says it should. Should I be worried that theres is something wrong with these lights?

Just checked my similar age car without starting the engine and the red oil can light is briefly lit and then goes out; just like all the other warning lights.

Can you run a check using the diagnostics port?

My 59 plate bkd oil lights don't do anything when starting the car usually, I do seem to recall I saw the oil pressure light for a few seconds after changing the oil though so I'm assuming all is well.

Ok, so we all know that to assume makes an ass out of you and me... But I confess, I've seen this asked before and it does seem to be normal:

I guess it varies between engine types etc etc, but it's not out of the ordinary for the light not to show up on cranking. Certainly doesn't on my BKD.

Nor on a BKC, I can however test its function in VCDS unless I dreamed that up!

I'm pretty sure all the idiot lights can be tested using the output tests on the instrument panel.

Disconnect the crank sensor, crank engine over for a bit and then the oil pressure light will come up with the associated audible warning.

So does it give a warning if there is oil pressure but (it thinks) the engine is not turning?

More that it knows the engine is turning over but has not started. Cranking speed doesn’t move the oil pump fast enough to generate sufficient pressure so the oil pressure warning is triggered.

I get it!

I reckon the light is inhibited when ignition is on and for a couple of seconds of cranking, mine always starts in 1/4 of a turn but once when I have changed the engine oil, filter and fuel filter & had not primed either filter housing the engine cranked for a very long time before getting fuel to start, during that period he oil light came on and then went out when the oil pump primed before the fuel pump did and the engine started, there was also I think the warning tone.

Hi Everyone, thanks for all your input. It definitely made me feel a bit better that im not the only one that this happens to. But I might try get some diagnostics done on it just to be sure!
