Ouch... damaged front suspension

Featured Replies

Last week I hit a kerb really hard avoiding an accident (not my fault!) and it has done some damage to the left front suspension. Initially we thought it was just the stub axle had slid up the strut a bit, however the mechanic adjusted that today and aligned everything back up and it still has pretty major camber (3 degrees) and looks lower than the other side. Problem is nothing looks amiss visually; before we go ordering new struts and such, anyone have any idea what it could be? Maybe strut top mount?

If I recall from fitting my lowering springs, the circled component is the front wheel hub. Apologies if links are not allowed, something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-OCTAVIA-MK3-5E-VRS-2-0-TDI-FRONT-SUSPENSION-HUB-N-S-F-PASSENGER-SIDE-LEFT/372697684316?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D094f55c8eb934ec8aaaab1672d6f0594%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D372697684316%26itm%3D372697684316%26pg%3D2481888&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ac5450859-b289-11e9-973f-74dbd1805452|parentrq%3A4152c89516c0ad305836f459fff1d24e|iid%3A1

The suspension shock absorber fits through the top of it and then there is a lip at the bottom which prevents if dropping through any further. I believe what you've circled is the shock dropped through the bottom of the front hub.

I'm basing my observations on the "clean" metal surface within the circle.  It looks out of place compared to the rest of the components and their colour/dirtiness.

Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic.

Additional comments as observation.

I do agree that the clean area looks like an alloy component has sheared off.

On looking closer and comparing it to the other side the lip that stops the strut dropping through has indeed sheared neatly off. Hopefully a new hub carrier will be all that's needed. Cheers.

Double check the base of the shock isn't damaged/deformed either. But hopefully that is all that is required.
