Mysterious engine problem - P0342

Featured Replies

Hey,

Had this problem for a while - hopefully, someone has wrestled with the same kind of issues and we can come up with a solution.

The engine light is on and VGate MaxiScan -tool reports P0342 fault code. Description of the code is 'Camshaft position (CMP) -sensor A, bank 1-low input'. The tool suggests checking 'Wiring short to earth, CMP sensor or ECM'.

After resetting the code and memory with the tool, quite religiously the third start retriggers the engine light with the same code. The drivability of the motor remains about the same regardless of whether the engine light is on or not - maybe some hesitations on acceleration. Haven't really noticed anything too different. Sometimes the car won't start or requires a longer start sequence to fire up. This happens quite rarely, though. I learned that no catastrophic harm can occur with the issue - therefore this problem has been disregarded.

I followed the workshop manual instructions, unplugged the plug and measured a voltage of 5V with a 12.4V battery. I also started the engine without plugging in the plug and the behavior was exactly the same as it would be plugged in. The third start triggered the issue.

There is also the light for ASR (traction control system / anti-slip-regulation) on the screen - I don't know whether these issues are related. It seems to come and go on it's own.

Does anyone have any idea how to continue from here or pinpoint the issue - possible faulty part? I can provide more information if needed and continue investigations.

Big hint; you're resetting the fault memory without actually fixing the fault.
