Oil Filler Cap

Featured Replies

After  a 65 mile run I checked my oil level - I do this as a matter of routine, although  hardly ever need to top up. On this occasion it needed about an egg cupful which I duly added. On completion, closed the bonnet & later on drove about 6 miles - an orange warning light flashed up ;  "EPC" was seen & "do not exceed 4000 rpm". I checked the manual for the meaning of "EPC", & unlocked the bonnet - lo & behold, the oil filler cap was missing - "you dumb sod" says I ! I searched for the cap to no avail, & so called Skoda Assistance who sent the AA out, arriving within 40 minutes. "It's unusual for the cap to actually fall through" says the AA man, who crawled underneath & banging the plate beneath the engine heard the cap bouncing about - he then somehow knocked it onto the ground, re fitted the cap & reset the warning light via his laptop, leaving a very relieved Karoq driver (ME !) red faced but very grateful for the excellent service provided by Skoda Assist & the AA.

Why would you put so little oil in. If it was in the hatched area there is no need to add oil

An egg cupful does sound a very small amount, barely enough to register a difference on the dipstick I'd have thought?

Glad you got it sorted. Leaving the oil cap off can result in oil spewing out all over the engine bay.

I only added that small amount because it was all that was needed to bring it to the correct  level - I'm obsessive about oil levels, less so it seems about replacing the cap ! With regards to oil splayed from the open orifice, Mr AA man said most cars have baffles inside to prevent that, which seemed to work for me - he also said that Skoda receive far less AA callouts than VW or Audi cars despite sharing many parts, quality control being  the reason he thought.
