VRS Full check over and boosty issues.

Featured Replies

Hi folks, firstly have to say this is one of the best owners forums for any car I've ever been a member of! Already had some great information and advice from folks on here and the guides are great too. I have a few issues with my recently purchased VRS some of which you folks have given me some ideas about already. The previous owner did a bunch of mods: SIA delete, N249 delete, PCV delete, Forge 007 recirc, 3" down with decat, plug and play map and a boost gauge. I've had to find out what most of these things do for a start as I was previously a N/A driver. I have a few questions which I know you mega brains will help with!

How accurate are aftermarket boost gauges? This one appears to be anywhere between 8-10 PSI but can shoot up to 18/19 PSI which seems pretty high to me? It is a mechanical and appears to be plumbed in exactly as the guide on here describes.

The boost itself seems to search a bit at the beginning, fluctuate a bit, ramp up and then have a big dump (exhaust noise) of pressure (?) when you lift off.

I'm thinking this might be down to the plug and play map? I have the original ECU which I can drop back in if this is a good idea?

All of this also leads me to ask, is there a recommended place near Nottingham and surrounding areas who could do a check over and give me a better idea of what i might be dealing with?

I'm probably going to refit a cat too as VOSA are a regular occurrence where I work and I'm not actually a fan of extra emissions (controversial I know). I'm assuming the SIA isn't required for re-fit of a CAT.

Cheers for any advice / info you folks deliver, eventually the wagon will be right, fingers crossed.

Standard boost is around 10. With this whole stage thing; 12-15psi is stage one with 19-22psi being a stage 2.

Stage 2 needs good air flow. A decent FMIC and induction kit with either a decat or sportscat will help achieve the higher numbers. If you have access to VCDS you can log your boost to see what’s happening.

You could have a bad map or something else. If that was me I’d probably take it to a decent tuner if you have no idea who did the previous work; places like R-Tech or Shark Performance would be a good shout.

I’m sure someone with a lot more knowledge will be along and help.
