Car smoking on idle

Featured Replies

Hi guys, have a big problem with my 2.0tsi. Using alot of oil. So compression tested and all cylinders are at 159.  Sometimes when car is at idle the engine management light will flash, but as soon as you drive away it goes out. Car has a slight misfire and has an oil leak at back of engine I can't find. Csr has had new coils and plugs. When plugged in it comes up engine misfire cylinder 2 and 4. Could the pcv valve cause this.? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

How many miles on the car? Year? Good/bad maintenance? Hard driving?

Just turned 80000. 2011 Don't know about history but I have changed oil 3 times in last 10000 miles.

Read the pinned thread at the top of the page on the 1.8 & 2.0 TSI's.   That is probably going to give you the answer to why the high / unacceptable oil use.

How much oil is it using in what distance.?

i had oil leaking from air intake pipes feeding turbo and underneath around diverter valve and turbo coolant and oil lines dripping onto driveshaft, I was chasing it for a year or more.

the fine oil separator / pcv replacement has seemed to fix that. It didn’t contribute to much oil usage or any smoking though.

Also check oil lines banjo connections to turbo. Will need a mirror and maybe remove intake tract at back of engine to get a better look.

The car was using alot of oil. I have just changed pcv valve. Less white smoke but still there on idle. Had car idling earlier and engine management light started flashing after 5 mins. Pulled away and it went out.
