Just look at the frickin size of even the smaller 2 door model compared to the original Landrover which can carry more people, has more luggage capacity, can tow much heavier loads and wont be written off if you drive it through a puddle.

The last 90 had 93" of a wheel base, sometimes the same at both sides. This 90 has 102" and the 110 has 119".

 

PS.

The 90 with the Jump Seat option in the front is a 6 seater with nearly no rear space but enough for 6 pairs of wellies and a small hamper.

I don't dislike the new Defender but clearly its going to be difficult to get one with enough doors and a few options below £50K.   I was thinking JLR had taken leave of their senses but the Jeep Wrangler seems to start about £45K. 

 

I guess there are a lot more options in the cheaper "hard-core" 4x4  market than there used to be with pick ups etc, so maybe they are right to leave it.

There will be the British / Welsh Assembled BMW engined proper 4x4 Offroader available in a couple of years.
