Rumble in the rear

Featured Replies

I have a 2013 estate 4x4 and when driving at speed can hear a loud whirring noise at the back of the car. Looked under the other day and saw the prop shaft bushing was badly worn. Has anyone replaced this before ? Big job? Also would that be the cause of the noise ?

Hi @Col1n you've posted this in the mk3 section; you'll likely get more advice/help if you post in the Mk2 section.

Hopefully one of the site moderators will move it across for you.

Dont know how I managed that. Apologies

While at that job has your Haldex had an Oil / Filter change, and has the diff ever had an oil change?

Haldex was done recently .5k ago. Diff hasnt been done since I bought it. Just wondering would that perished bush cause a noise inside the car

I also have a 4x4, what is the mileage on your car ?

Worth checking your rear tyres for sawtoothing on the inner edge, that could be making the noise, very prone to uneven wear on the rear of Superb Estates.

It is important that the replaceable filter is changed when the Haldex oil is changed - Skoda do not acknowledge there is a filter in the Gen 4 Haldex unit that needs changed.  Many folk change the oil to schedule but the clogged filter eventually causes the pump to fail.  Skoda don't event demount the pump and clean the strainer out as the rate doesn't allow for that extra labour time....makes it pointless if you had it done at Skoda.

Theres 135,000 km on mine. Tyres look evenly worn so far although for some reason the camber on the front is causing a difference of 15mm from side to side .

Might be worth a 4 wheel alignment i.e a Hunter Pro-align, does make a difference to tyre wear and driveability, roughly £80 - £100.

Can't comment further on the propshaft am afraid, might be worth seeking out a good VAG independent for an opinion on the issue.

Just wonder if a wheel bearing is on its way out, worth checking.

Cheers

I would be checking rear wheel bearings as well
Very common😎

Bearings seem ok. Serious head scratching going on here. Mechanic cant put his finger on it either. Does anyone have a how to for removing the prop shaft to replace that bush by any chance??

Don't dismiss sawtoothing of the rear tyres and / or the rear wheel bearings, both extremely common on older MkII Superb's.

I experienced both, and they both resulted in a droning / whirring from the back end.

The sawtoothing is only evident if you remove the wheel or climb under the car and can view a large portion of the inner tyre / tread.

My wheel bearing failure did not result in any play, with the wheel on or off.

The noise could well be unrelated, but I'd be looking to rule out tyres and bearings before digging too deep into the transmission or Haldex system, at least initially.

If you run the flat of your hand around the circumference of the top of the tyre tread you will feel any sawtoothing.

One way it will feel smooth, rubbed in the oposite direction it will feel rough, usually only evident on the inner third of the tread.

Theres does seem to be a whirring noise at the back left when you hit 50kph. Might see is it a bearing first. Hell of a lot cheaper than replacing that bushing
