Anyone fitted a shark fin aerial?

Featured Replies

Was bored and browsing ebay and saw you can get an imitation BMW/SAAB shark fin type aerial. Has anyone fitted one these? would be interested to see what they are like.

i was also bored one day and found the shark fin aerial. Tyey come in about 4 different colors but wouldnt they not match the car color ?

am also intrested to see what they look like

Will you still get a reception from the radio if you fit one of these ? I expect not. You will need an amplified fin (real one) and the hassle involved taking the head lining out and linking everything together (let alone sealing against leaks) seems a real grind to me.

(edit) See this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Skoda-Felicia-Octavia-Fabia-Alu-Beesting-Style-Aerial_W0QQitemZ8053617053QQcategoryZ36676QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Reception is great.

I think there is a genuine Audi one that might fit.

I thought the standard setup had the amplification within the head unit not in the aerial base.

thinking about it a standard type areial should be able to pick signals up better than one of these so maybe some sort of booster would be needed.

But am interested to see how it goes:)

I put one on my octy because i like how they look, which is a good job really cos the reception is rubbish, don't mind though as i only listen to cd's anyway:thumbup:

Thing is though, they don't improve FM performance is based on the standard FULL LENGTH aerial. I honestly can't see it being worth it. Like the previous post said, the reception was rubbish.

i reckon i'll have bought a lemon to be honest: drunken ebaying: don't do it! not as bad as the time i bought an upright piano for 11 quid and nearly ended up with a second one the same night i'd also bid on, but there you go. i listen to MW radio 5 as well. if it's not massively worse than the standard one, and looks OK on (gonna colour code it I think) then I'll be happy, otherwise it'll go back on fleabay...

looking forward to trying it, though, and it'll save valuable seconds when going into the car wash!

Its my fault. I take all the blame.

 I know the feeling ! Remember the 'beeping' reversing light' Ah well.

right: got the thing nearly ready to fit.

it's quite neat really, although overpriced for what it is.

it's a hollow plastic fin, with double-sided sticky on the base to hold it on the car. comes in black shiny finish.

it's got a short length of wire inside it, with a connector on the end that you screw into your aerial stub - so the actual aerial you'll end up with is like stub plus 6" of wire.

tried it out and the radio still works (although it works without ANY aerial too!) so presume it'll be OK but definitely a bit worse than the standard whip aerial.

as soon as i've got some paint i'll spray it bodycoloured and fit it and let you all know how it ends up - did a test fit last night and it actually looks pretty smart...!

Sounds promising! Does it need to be coloured?

well, it's shiny black au naturel, so probably.

have sprayed it and fitted it - self-adhesive not really quite up to the job so will probably end up refitting it eventually:

reception is definitely worse than stock, although I can live with it at the mo' as it picks up XFM manchester OK...to see if you can live with it, remove your beesting and imagine it's a bit better than that, but not a lot!

I love the small Jabba sticker and the baby seat!
