I have a 2014 Octy with Amundsen head unit.  Dealer says it is too old to enable car play via software update.  Are they correct?  Would I have to upgrade head unit to get it working, and if so what unit would I need?

They are correct. Search my build thread or any other radio related post as there is loads of info around them. I’ve posted in most. You’ll need to decide what screen size you want, what features you want and how much you want to spend. A MIB2 Amundsen retrofit with the 6.5 inch screen is running around £500 or so, add another 150-200 on top for an 8 inch screen. A MIB2 Columbus or 2.5 Amundsen both with 8 inch screens is about £8-900 and a MIB2.5 Columbus with the 9.2 inch screen is about £11-1200.

Maybe contact a local Car HiFi specialist, as my local one seems to able to add a module to any touch screen sterio to add CarPlay.
