New noise / concerned

Featured Replies

I bought a Skoda Yeti petrol DSG (‘65) 50k miles a few weeks ago. Loving it, except...

I am having two issues with it, and the garage I bought it from our happy for me to take it back but it is a couple of hours away so thought I would post here first.

One is that the infotainment system seems to shut itself down and often does not come back on.   This happens daily now. So I have given up using the radio.

The other more serious one, is a funny repetitive almost metallic noise. I can only hear it from within the drivers seat or front passenger seat. And driving very slowly. It is slightly high pitched and becomes faster as the revs go up peaking around 2000 revs.  Also I can’t really hear it above gear  4+. Concerned there is something wrong with either the gears or the engine ?

It is not the AC and I cannot hear it from outside or when I left the bonnet!

Does it happen with the AC on or off? Might be the compressor clutch noise as thats belt driven and increases with engine rpm?

(Compressor is always spinning with the belt whether AC is on or OFF it might just be a bearing)

It happens with it on or off. It hasn’t happened for a couple of days now. The weather has got colder and dryer 🤔

Next time you hear it, keep it running, open the bonnet, spray a small amount of water onto the rubber drive belt (use like a plant sprayer), and see if it quietens the noise, it might be just the belt needs replacing :)

Have you taken a resting battery voltage?
Low battery volts will shut down systems.

No way will a poly vee belt with a functional automatic tensioner ever slip on the aircon compressor pulley unless the pump is seized and there is a shear plate to cover that eventuality.

The pulley boss may have stripped its splines which cannot be seen unless the pump is removed, in that case the aircon will stop working.
