Differerence between MY19 and MY20 272 engines

Featured Replies

Hey, guys.

Looking thru the engine specs of the new 272 engines, i noticed that the MY19 and MY20 versions are slightly different:

Emissions: 162 vs. 161

Engine power (RPM): 5600-6500 vs. 5500-6500

Engine torque (RPM): 1700-5600 vs. 2000-5400

Interestingly, the MY19 version has the same engine power and torque specs as the previous 280 PS engine! So that makes me wonder whether, despite the addition of the PPF, the MY19 version might have retained the MPI injection system of the 280.

When looking at 0-62 speed they are all slightly different:

MY19: 5.6s; MY20: 5.7s and MY18 (280): 5.8s

Of course the speed is also affected by things other than the engine itself, so that's more difficult to compare.

Thoughts?

I think that any 280 or 272' will hit 0-60 in 5.1-5.3 seconds and have more than the advertised power output.    A fair few people have data logged these times.  I've spoken to a few tuners who also confirm that there's as little as makes no difference between the EA888's which are badged 280/290/300/310 bhp, when dyno'd.  The Leon Cupra is an example; both the 280 and the 290 made ~305bhp on the same dyno.  It doesn't matter if the dyno is wrong and that number is high, the point is that it's consistently wrong and the numbers should be different.

I would have preferred the 272 due to the extra gear, and apparently more efficient, slicker DSG box.  The GPF's are newer tech and obviously there's always scope to have a early implementation issues, though I've not heard of any issues so far.  The changes, if any, between MY19 and MY20 could be from ongoing development and testing on this unit, seeing as they likely had less time for R&D, in order to meet compliance deadlines.  Knowing VW's history they could have even been waiting to see how the cars would be tested, to get an idea of what they could 'get away with' in future but that's likely me being cynical.

I think the EA888 is a gem of an engine.  I've driven it most of the cars it's fitted to and even the lower output (e.g 220-245)ps cars feel no different unless you're really wanting to press on.

Although i'm not bothered about fuel consumption, i also noticed that it's a little better on the 2020 272. I'm picking up a K-plate 2019 272 tomorrow and my hope is that it has the MPI of the 280s. I've asked Skoda UK what the difference is, but, surprise surprise, they couldn't answer on the phone this am and haven't got back to me either!

The early MY19 272's still retained the exhaust valves 😉

I do not think any 272 has MPI. I've got a lovely area where it looks like it should be.

Aha, that's interesting. Just read another thread where it looks like only the early MY19s retained their valves. So, being a MAR19 reg, i doubt mine will have them - I'll be able to check tomorrow!

So no MPI and no valves on the later MY19s makes me wonder even more what the difference vs. the MY20s is.
