I guess this a bit of an exhausted subject but....... My mk 3 tsi 110 fabia is coming up to a year old with 10k miles on it. My journeys are mostly 20 -50 mile trips or more, on A and B roads, and some motorway trips, not many short trips.  Do you think it would be advisable to change to variable servicing after its first service? Presumably it would then be due for a service at 30k or 3 years, which would mean that the extra things done at the 20k service would not be done until 30k miles? I'm not sure how this would work in practice.

 

Secondly, is the pollen filter really replaced at 10k? The schedule indicates that its included in the price, which brings me on to on to to my third question.

My car is a GPF model and has 0w20/508 oil from the factory. What have people been quoted for the first oil service that have had 0w20/508 oil used rather than 5w30?

Where do you see a schedule showing the Pollen Filter replaced at 1 year?

It is not.  You could ask for it to be done.

(The schedule is at the 2nd fixed service or the 1st Variable / Flexible service, so basically after 2 years, 

but then cars get used in different environments, that is the guidelines. Pollen filters can get a clean out, you can do that, 

or replace yourself., same with Air Filters.)

 

*New car @ 1 year old just needs the Oil & Filter change, body inspection and health check*.

Not the Fixed Price Minor or Interim Service that shows for cars 3-10 years old on Fixed Servicing, where often parts might not get replaced.

What are you being quoted for a 1st year service?

Tell them to use VW 508 / 509 if that is what you want even if you are sticking with Fixed Servicing.

 

VW504 so 5w 30 FS LL is fine, it is Skoda / VW that talk about emissions, they brought in VW 508 for the WLTP  / RDE & now RDE2.

 

If you want to go Variable servicing you had best be going to check stuff yourself and not go a year between looking over things.

Thanks for this -  it makes more sense now. Contacted 3 Skoda main dealers. Prices quoted for oil/filter, body inspection and health check are £132, £149 and £159 all inc. vat, the first two of which the price remains the same regardless of oil grade, the 3rd wasn't sure.  All dealers default to using 5w-30 by the way, and it seems that this is because this what they have rather than knowledge based. 

 

Presumably 507 LL spec is ok as I used this in a new 1,6TDI golf (2011) for 140k miles, and is backwards compatible with 504 LL, and used 504 LL in a previously owned (2002) 1.9TDI Golf I had from new, and did 180k miles on it with no engine issues, both on variable servicing.  But why the need for LL type oil at 10k intervals - beyond me!  The real question I guess is which, (504/7 or 508) is better for the engine?

Interestingly I was told 12k miles for first service when I picked up my car in March. 8 months on and I'm about 80 miles from 12k so will need to book it in... hopefully will be cheaper than the 'standard' £179 they quote on the website.

VW Spec 508 is probably better for the environment and VW Spec 504 is probably better for the engine.

I'm dubious about this switch to 0w20 in an engine designed to run on 5w30. I notice both my Skodas are really noisy first cold start, both have 0w20 oil and both engines sound knackered for about 2 to 3 seconds.

When you used VW 504 / 507 so 5w 30 FS  III that was the Variable and Fixed service required oil for a TDI.  You had to use VW507.

 

As to the VW 504 & TSI's,  the VW 502 00 was fine for Fixed Servicing.

 

Same now with VW508 / 509,    VW509 used with TDI for fixed or variable servicing.

the TSI's can still use VW502 for fixed servicing even with a car with a GPF.

Recall reading recently (maybe on this site), that modern synthetic oils generally have a life way beyond what the car manufacturers suggest in their user manuals. Last time I went to a main dealer about three years ago, I specifically asked about pollen filters. I was told that the "book"says 20k but that if you live/drive in a clean area they are probably good for 30k. One has to bear in mind that manufacturers like VAG always err well on the safe side so that they don't get too much trouble from the individuals who regularly abuse cars and there are plenty of those as we all know. It's a bit like the cam belt renewal business which VAG suggests should be done at 5 years. I asked a VAG tech man why they say this when most other manufacturers suggest 60k miles or even longer. He admitted that they like to play it ultra safe  and that it is NOT mandatory but only a "recommendation". So I do about 6k miles per annum  and intend to not change until 7 years I suggested to him. You will probably be perfectly OK he replied unless you habitually insult the engine with high revs, etc. Then of course there are plenty of guys out there who will do you a perfectly good service for half of what a main dealer charges. Do you really want to pay their bills just to keep their premises, etc., nice and posh.
