BMD head removal

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

just a quick one for the master mechanics... the timing chain cover how the f*** do you get it off? I’ve done the all the bolts, the pulley is off and engine mount is off. It is coming but it would appear the sealant on the oil pan has turned to concrete over the last 14 years.

any tips? Hoping to have it off in the morning so I can get the head to the machine shop

The official method says take the sump off first. The reason probably is that there are two dowel pins that come out horizontally from the block to locate the cover, so the chain cover needs to be removed horizontally outwards, which is trickier if you have to break the seal to the sump in its shearing direction, if that makes sense?

Yeah, the sump pan has to come off.

If for no other reason than you can't be sure no old sealer or crud hasn't dropped into the sump.

Okay that makes sense I’ll try and break the seal on the oil pan and if I can’t ill stick some bolts back in and the engine mount back on and drop the oil And pull the pan to break the seal.

It’s off! Pan is still on but I’m going to take it off once I re-assemble the side of the engine tomorrow. Everything under the bonnet needs a good clean so the oil pan can join the club lol that or I’ll just get a new one 🤪

Edit: ignore this post just realised there is an extra whole for the oil level sensor

Sorry guys new problem lol. Might have had an accident whilst I was giving the timing chain cover a good clean up. Long story short I need a new one.

would anyone know if I can get away with any with the part number 03D109211? Or does it have to have the specific letters at the end as from what I can tell the only difference between the one I have and the ones with the oil level sensor is that they have a additional bolt hole which I just wouldn’t use?

Thanks
