Any tips on reversing?

Featured Replies

:) I only drive a car, but often get out and look. That pacing one is a very good Handy Tip  especially if I ever have to drive one of those cryogenic road tankers...Cue Mo knitting faster

I think Moose is away for a while isn't he?

An amusing anecdote for you all about reversing my Uni transport, a Yamaha RD350YPVS motorcycle, should you wish to have a chuckle at my expense.

I studied at Plymouth Uni, and sometimes shopped at a large Sainsbury's store near Marsh Mills roundabout.

Out front are a number of metal bollards. One day I'd packed my shopping into a rucksack, put it on my back and jumped astride my trusty Yamaha. I then paddled my feet to move the 'bike backwards from the shop front and heard the unfortunate sound of plastic shattering against metal. That's right, I'd 'reversed' my 'bike into the bollard and in doing so broke the rear lamp lens. 47 quid later at the local dealership I had a nice new rear lens. As I am sure you can understand 47 pounds is a lot of money to a student, even back in those luxurious days of grants. I was pretty annoyed with myself to use a polite term ;)

A couple of weeks later I went to that store again and parked in the same area. I paddled the 'bike back out from were I'd parked and guess what? That's right, backwards into a bollard shattering the rear lamp lens once more! I was considerably more annoyed with myself on this second occasion.

The tale ends here. I managed to learn to take more care after relieving myself of nigh on 100 quid in parts making the same mistake twice!

Thanks everyone, I'm busy working but I'm getting the hang of it now, its amazing how much you rely on your mirrors, so much so that the ones in the car have now been changed and I can see so much more.

Luckily, I'm only on call again today, so I've had the chance to read all this.
