How do you change the drl bulb under the headlight?

Is that the one that is accessed from under the wheel arch with a special (supplied) tool? just turn the wheels from lock to lock to reach the coverplate

No, that is the indicator bulbs.

I removed cover at the back of the headlight and was able to extract bulb with my left hand. It is a very difficult and would be impossible if you have a big hand.The bulb holder pulls straight out and the bulb is a straight pull out also.

A new bulb is about £25 at the dealer.

There are plenty of led bulbs on ebay/amazon.Has anybody tried these?

The problem with the LED units is that they will cause the Bulb Failure Warning light to come on in most cases, so they need an additional resistor in their circuitry, and these need to be very carefully mounted as they get HOT. 
Some say they are "CanBus friendly" but experience here has found that the cheaper the bulb the less likely that is to be true.
