Battery light on even with keys out

Hello, my Fabia Mk I (1.2htp AZQ) has the battery light slightly on (10% of full intensity - barely visible) permanently, even with keys out. The alternator gives about 14.2V so it charges OK. Any ideas?  

When driving, does the light increase in intensity as the revs rise. If so probably voltage regulator in the alternator.

No, it doesn't change at all. I am starting to blame the control unit which drives the LED.

I suggest taking the instrument cluster out, taking the back cover off it, and drying it out for a few hours if there is any sign of moisture on the board.
