Replacement battery - does it need coding?

Featured Replies

Does a replacement battery need to be coded to the car?  The last car that I had a new battery fitted in was a BMW 5 series, and the AGM battery had to be coded to make sure that it charged correctly.

I can get a Bosch battery from several places for less than £140 mail order. Skoda website suggests that they charge £210 fitted.

Presumably if it needs coding, I'd need a VAG specialist to do this if I opt to buy the battery online?

If your car has stop/start and it probably has then someone will have to code the new battery to tell it what to do and when and to prevent you losing other coded stuff on your car such as your keys (particularly important if you have KESSY).

Thanks.  Yes, got stop/start and Kessy.

I guess I'll have to try and find an independent in my area, or stump up the cash and get the main dealer to supply and fit.

The battery in my car is probably on it's way out, as Kessy and stop/start stop working if I don't drive the car for a few days. Always opens with the fob though, and never had a problem starting it. I guess it's disabling things because the voltage is dropping while parked? I've also seen a "12v low" warning message a couple of times.

Yes you are correct on all those points.

Get someone with VCDS to code the new battery in.

I would do that, if I could find anyone local - I'm in West Cornwall, near to Penzance

Stupid question.... What's KESSY??
