Audience Tweeters Misaligned

Featured Replies

Just got our L&K Estate with Audience radio and 12 speakers - interested to see the 12 speakers are all in the doors - 3 each in all of the 4 - nothing in the rear. The sound is not bad, though so far appears a bit artificial even with the loudness off - but on string quartets, even over FM, you can hear the bow on the strings - excellent.

But.... the front-door tweeters are in the door trim just below the wing mirror mountings and angled towards the driver and passenger! Now why on earth would they do that - presume it's the same on the Stream? It means the soundstage is angled simultaneously towards driver and passenger, as each of "their" tweeters is blasting at them from their near ear.

Skoda should have thought a moment about the laws of acoustics - the far tweeter should be aiming at you more directly than the near one (most easily done by aiming it directly across the car while yours is doing the reverse), so that it compensates for its distance and all listeners get a balanced soundstage.

Now I suppose I'll have to find a way of getting the tweeter grilles off and inserting a cardboard baffle to shield some of the direct sound. Yes, it does work OK if I adjust the balance, but what's that's doing for my poor wife as passenger with an extra dose of treble into her left ear? Any better fixes anyone?

Bah!

I tend to agree about the poor position of the tweeters - too low and too close to the driver/passenger. Mark 1 Octy had the tweeters in the door mirror covers so the sound stage sounded further forward and more centred. I've got the bog standard Stream HU and 8 speaker set up and notice the problem you describe.

The tweeter grills are just clipped in - small screw driver or a 6" steel rule will pop them out.

Unfortunately, they are mounted in the door card moulding so it's not easy to change their alignment. One option would be after market component speakers with the tweeter stuck to the door mirror covers - not overly elegant.

Or perhaps a shield cutting the amount of treble coming directly at the driver and passenger? I always align my home hi-fi speakers so the tweeter axes cross about a metre in front of the listening position - in my experience this gives the widest and most precise soundstage.
